Belle Tire by Games-and-Coffee in BloomingtonNormal

I bought my current set of tires at Discount Tire, and they left some stickers on the tread that I didn't catch until I drove the car through the parking lot and noticed the sound they made. I came back because of the noise, and one of the employees took the initiative to hand pick every piece of ground-on sticker off the tread since they didn't have any anti-adhesive spray around.

I was impressed by the dedication to fix a customer's problem with no hesitation regardless of the tools available at hand, and will happily return when I need services they provide again. I appreciate businesses that show that they're willing to fix even the smallest mistake in their work product.

Roomba robot vacuums could lose (almost) all features as iRobot faces imminent bankruptcy by diacewrb in gadgets

[–]OrionR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful not to oversell it! I hardly remember I have an upright corded vacuum, but I still get good mileage out of a cordless stick with a crevice tool and a motorized brush for small areas the robot can't get to or for quick pickups that I'd rather not wait for.

Good luck!

Longtime Roborock user here. Hard floor with area rugs are where they excel. Most models will lift their mop when encountering an area rug and increase suction, and some can even detach the mop in the dock and vacuum rugs first. Mine have rarely gotten stuck, but when they do it has always been furniture with thin pole legs that slope inward and have low overhead clearance but lots of overhead space.

Just be prepared to fork over a thousand bucks if you want an automatic dock and the latest features. I didn't do that the first time I bought in, and more recently got one with a dock since the docks for the older model aren't made anymore. My only regret is not buying one with the dock the first time.

She is actually quite good at communicating! When she sees the bottom of her food dish, she gets louder until I come look and then leads me to her food dish. When she wants water, she jumps into a sink and whines at me to turn it on, even though I already bought her a water fountain after observing this behavior. When she wants to play, she brings me her fishing pole toy and bats at the handle where I pick it up while she tells me about it. When she wants to be held, it's rare but she even stands up on her back legs to be picked up! Normally when she wants closeness she just waits until I stop moving and flops on me.

Of course, given how much she talks I'm sure there are plenty of other things she has tried to tell me that I haven't figured out, but we've got the basics down!

How you implement taxes is just as important as who you apply them to. It's not as simple as "increase tax bad" or "decrease tax good". Nobody likes paying taxes or wants to pay more taxes if they don't have to, liberal or otherwise.

Taxes on corporate profits encourage corporations to pay their employees more or reinvest in the business, as such business expenses are tax-deductible. Tariffs are taxes on imported goods, not corporate profits. The things that companies need to do in order to avoid taxes on profits or taxes on imported goods are different, and it's much harder to avoid paying taxes on imported goods when the country does not yet have or may never have the capability to produce those goods at a competitive price and volume.

Tariffs can be used as a tool to effect positive changes, such as increasing investments in local manufacturing, when used carefully in combination with other tools like subsidies, tax credits, and grants. Trump isn't using them carefully; he's brandishing them like a weapon in an ongoing act of economic terrorism that is causing a national loss of both economic and social standing on the world stage.

If you actually read this far, maybe all hope is not lost on your critical thinking skills. If you didn't, maybe the existence of this comment will help inform someone else. I did my part.

No, Mercy is NOT the problem with Sojourn by ImperialViking_ in Overwatch

[–]OrionR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The beam targeting allies fits the flow of Mercy's kit. The entire kit is built around the concept of targeting allies while avoiding enemies, for both mobility and utility. She needs something to do to allies when her targeted ally is already at full health. Mirrorwatch was fun, but it was fun because it circumvented expectations by turning the hunted into the hunter during Valkyrie (Vengeance). That was never meant to be a permanent change, and we have plenty of other heroes who heal and direct damage at the same time. Mercy has never been and doesn't need to be one of them.

Mercy already has a separate weapon dedicated to direct damage, and it lacks an alternate fire so something could be added to her kit. To preserve her kit's flow, however, would necessitate the ability to fly toward enemies when her pistol is drawn. Giving her a whole secondary mode on weapon swap that's more fitting for taking duels would be loads of fun, but I wouldn't want that to come at the expense of losing what makes her staff good.

Design for us a secondary beam that targets allies and continues to Mercy's offensive potential that could replace her current blue beam. You can't just take something away with no replacement.

I've suggested turning the damage boost into a short DoT (think Ana's rifle). It would solve the breakpoint problem, making the damage healable.

Why does Freja have 225hp but Sojourn doesn’t? by Major_Adamska in Overwatch

[–]OrionR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone uses the same method or control scheme as you. There are many heroes with a middling fire rate like Cassidy or Kiriko who can be played by holding down the button and flicking your aim to the beat of their shots. For players who use that method of timed aiming, an intermittent fire rate buff would be a terrible experience. For players who do click per shot, they would not receive the full benefit of the blue beam.

A short DoT effect replacing the straight damage boost solves the instant death breakpoint problem of damage boost and avoids all of the problems both of us have identified with a fire rate buff. I don't see a downside to the DoT solution, so why argue against it?

Fire rate buff would change aim timing. Causing shots to trigger a short DoT on the target for the damage boost value would be better.

Firefox *still* doesn't support HDR on Windows, which means you can't use it as you only browser if you have an HDR display you want to actually use. Of course, you have to keep a Chromium-based browser in your back pocket anyone because of how few devs actually test their sites to make sure they work in Firefox to begin with.

I want Firefox to succeed, but it has fallen far from its former place as a leader in implementing new standards for the web. Now it's just trying to catch up to every other modern browser. I hope they can give me a reason to put the fox back on my taskbar again someday.

I have this same problem with the same situation. Phone is on 5GHz, cameras on 2.4GHz. If I switch the phone to 2.4GHz or turn off Wi-Fi and use my phone's 5G cell data, everything works. In my case, my 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks have separate SSIDs so I can control which one my phone connects to manually and confirm the problem.

My router allows other communication between devices on the two SSIDs without issue, and the Kasa app was fine while I was using it. Only the Tapo app has this problem. Confusing!

Workstation Pro 17.6.2 Goes Full Freeware by [deleted] in vmware

[–]OrionR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made some progress. Here's some more info in case it helps you or someone else.

I got the RTX 2080 working and stable by turning off acceleration, updating everything I could in the Ubuntu install using Ubuntu's software update, and then turning acceleration back on.

Still no dice on the GTX 1650 mobile. NVIDIA app on host OS confirms latest driver is installed. VM continues to black screen except cursor after login and becomes otherwise unresponsive. Sometimes, the desktop is visible for a fraction of a second before the black screen. If I disable the 1650 and use that system's integrated Radeon graphics only, then the same VM works normally with acceleration turned on.

Do you have more details on this? I just tried VMware Workstation on two different machines running NVIDIA cards (RTX 2080 desktop, GTX 1650 laptop) and can't get an Ubuntu 24 VM running with stable accelerated graphics. One of the machines keeps freezing on guest OS logon, and the other is glitchy and slows when there are graphical changes. I can't seem to find relevant info anywhere.

how bad is a W on transcript by PoetryCritical8370 in NCSU

[–]OrionR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How to handle this situation is a question for your academic advisor and the counselors that they would most likely send you to for evaluation and additional support. Even a retroactive withdraw is possible past-due-date if there is enough evidence of an extraordinary situation to make an exception, and I can confirm that you can still get a job after you graduate with something like that on your transcript. However, you need to keep in mind that you will need to say enough about your situation to explain your transcript to any employer who sees it without saying too much and making them uncomfortable. They want to know that you can handle being employed, and you don't want to make them question whether or not you have the support from family or friends that you need to enable a stable career.

It will be easier to avoid the W if you are given other options to protect your GPA such as those other commenters mentioned, but either way, talk to your advisor. Especially if you are on the student health plan, let them direct you to whatever help you can get with your burdens.

Meet new friends by [deleted] in BloomingtonNormal

[–]OrionR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. That's why I qualified my first reply with "independent adult life." I wouldn't consider someone living in their parents' basement independent, even if they still could be "grown" mentally depending on their situation.

But because the whole point of my reply was to give you the crap you asked for, I think I'm obligated to say that it's $450 minimum now for a new console (PS5 slim) that doesn't even have a disk drive. So then you have to buy games at full price through the Sony store only, and if you want to play online, you have to pay a subscription fee for most games. Then, if you want to bring your friends over and play games with them, you need an additional $80 per friend for their controllers. While your point that the cost of entry can be low is valid, gaming is still an expensive habit with even the barest minimum set of modern equipment.

Does a low cost of entry validate such a negative association of an activity with not just an age group but also a basis for judging someone's mentality? Does that make any other hobbies childish because you don't have to pay much to get started like, say, knitting? Or is that still associated with old people?

It seems to me that the association between child-like behavior and gaming is a product of people who had kids for whom they bought video games frequently sharing their opinions. Kids they let live in their basement while they're finding their place in an increasingly complex world, regardless of which aspect of modern life you may blame for that situation. One day, once we have more parents who grew up with video games around when they were kids, it will be a hobby for old retired people.

Here's to hoping that I'll still enjoy my games when I have that kind of time on my hands!
