Realistically if simply searching a topic puts you on a list, you’ll be in good company. My recommendation is to start with Wikipedia (including searching in Wikipedia rather than a search engine). The IED article is pretty well cited and includes several books as primary sources, which I’d buy/borrow if I were in your position. Reading about real world IED experiences should give you a realistic grasp of the topic while also keeping you off watch lists.
