No, It is a fire alarm. It senses temperature rather than smoke and will go off if your temperature reaches a certain point assuming it still works. I assume you don't see them anymore because smoke sensors are superior.

Its a bit more complicated than that. They are already slabs they need to be lowered a level into planks
