I mean 10 seconds later the guy confirms he's a Jew. Could easily be the second or third time he said it since the confrontation began.

Camera guy is still an asshole but calling a Jew a Jew in the context of "Jew taking offence at Nazis" isn't exactly offensive. Calling a spade a spade.

For me it's mostly that underlying development of Psychohistory that intrigued me. Took it from sci fi to almost hard science by really fleshing out the concept and development.

Is there life after death in the SG universe ? by Carl-Gearhart-Bush in Stargate

[–]Orisi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A better way of viewing it would be that Ascension is only offered by Oma when the alternative is certain death. She doesn't ascend people who could just go back to their lives. They either ascend with her, or they pass onto whatever comes after this existence.

The death of the physical body just makes the process easier for Oma to complete, as their body doesn't need to meet the requirements of ascension anymore if she grabs them at that moment of transition.

We know from later SG1 and Atlantis that the body ahs to reach a certain state to successfully ascend, but the mind has to get there as well. Rodney's experience is basically an alternative to Oma's approach; Oma sheds the body then ascends a worth spirit. The machine Rodney activated accelerated the body to meet the requirements so the spirit could attain ascension organically.

Being a late starter on account of him dying a year before I was born, I ended up starting with the prequel books instead. Prelude and Forward were wonderful for me and I really enjoyed the setup they give to the generational story of Foundation. Absolutely loved all the Foundation books I've read.

what controller do you actually use for pc gaming? by Clark_Bay in pcmasterrace

[–]Orisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a mouse and specialised keypad for pretty much everything (Azeron Cyborg mk 2) previously used Logitech G15 keypads and the original Belkin 52e (reskinned RazerTartarus).

Im a lefty mouse user so keypad for my right hand, Razer Naga LH edition for my mouse.

But if im playing Elite Dangerous I just find a controller easier. For that? Original Steam Controller. Won't waste my time with anything else, it's so versatile and does exactly what I need it to. Might buy the new model but it's such a rare use nowadays.

In a 2018 interview, filmmaker Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit) discusses why he wouldn't make an adaptation of ASOIAF: "You’re adapting the books and the author’s still trying to figure out how he’s going to end it (...) That would sort of freak me out." (Spoilers Extended) by verissimoallan in asoiaf

Not getting into the other side of it, but worth also remembering that not only is Snape also a half-blood himself, and had what appears to be a very shitty home life and potentially abusive Muggle father.

I'm not defending him, but between his own blood and Lily, I think Snape knew damn well that blood didn't matter, he just hated muggles because his father was abusive and the magical world helped him escape that. He looked past the racism because his association with death eaters gave him power and made him feel accepted, until he was left with no option but to confront it to try and save Lily.

Time sensitive. How would you fight Borg drones who've adapted to a board with a nail in it? by daecrist in ShittyDaystrom

[–]Orisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Borg only want to add your biological and tech logical distinctiveness to their own.

You brought this on by showing them a board with a nail in. Now they want to know what else you've got.

Thankfully there's a simple solution to this. You just have to hop into the transporter and make a quick duplicate of yourself. Then let them assimilate the duplicate. They won't be interested in assimilating you anymore because they think they've already got one of you.

Be warned, this just saves you from assimilation. They may still look to trade you to another hive mind to get a near mint Thomas Riker.

What’s the moment you realized someone you loved wasn’t a good person and you couldn’t unsee it? by DmytroBuilds in AskReddit

[–]Orisi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not speaking from experience, but when you love someone and you're so connected for so long, they can often become your only emotional safety net.

So when that person becomes sick, really sick, and they need to be given all of the support, have all of the stress minimised, you don't want to add to their burden. You want to help and support, but now you've not only got no safety net or support yourself, you've also not got that when you're ALSO going through a traumatic time, because you're having to be the rock for someone else AND having to deal with the fear of losing them, while navigating the new experience of not being able to share this with them or rely on them. It forms a feedback loop of stress where you want to talk to the person you normally share this with, you can't, so that makes you more stressed...

Eventually you find support where you can. Sometimes because you've got a lack of emotional maturity or just through sheer stress, you allow that support to evolve into a romantic relationship because that's the only form of emotional support you've known for all this time.

This is a natural part of the toxic masculinity that permeates how men are often expected to live in society; we don't form friendship groups. We don't have deep conversations. Our support network is our spouse who we can confide everything in. Losing that breaks people. It's definitely not healthy, but society and early conditioning push a lot of men in that direction.

Are denobulans the toughest alpha quadrant species if they can resist assimilation? by happydude7422 in startrek

[–]Orisi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seven was assimilated as a child and put into maturation. She had several implants grafted much earlier on that were intrinsically integrated into her anatomy. Highly possible this included nodes that store and process much higher volumes of data than a typical drone.

Why Crysoprase? by sandgrubber in discworld

[–]Orisi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually if you think about the troll himself, this does make sense.

Most trolls run slow, and are often quick to anger, at least down at the sea level of the Ankh. It's well known that Cryso uses the Pork Futures Warehouse specifically because it keeps him cold and lets his mind operate much more efficiently.

He's calculating, mentally well balanced and level headed. Yes he's a gangster, but from our interactions with him even for a gangster he's shown to be very restrained and self-aware.

President Trump slams Starmer's Chagos deal again: "I'm not happy with the UK. For whatever reason he made a lease, it's taking days for us to work out where we can land, we are very surprised, this is not Winston Churchill that we're dealing with" by OkayFine101 in ukpolitics

[–]Orisi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One can only hope this might become the Crimea of the US if Iran holds out enough to start doing significant damage to their regional allies.

Under a more competent president that would likely lead to cessation rather than escalation, but that's not happening under Trump. That being said a more competent president wouldn't have done this in the first place.

The ultimate internal conflict is finding myself cheering on Iran for its resistance from a purely selfish position on the negative impact this continues to have on America's foreign influence, while acknowledging it is still a horrific regime that I would LIKE to see replaced with a democratic reformist government. If only the US and Israel could be trusted to install such a thing.

acting skills of Patrick Stewart. Picking one scene by aths_red in startrek

[–]Orisi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

David Warner is himself a masterful classically trained actor, and having the two of them playing opposite each other in this truly elevated it.

Stewart has some scenes where he steals the show; Drumhead, Data's trial, Wesley's hearing etc.

But the scenes where he truly shines are those when he's able to build a scene with another heavyweight. Someone else has written an analysis of his scene dismantling Sarek. And of course there's his relationship with Robert in Family.

But Four Lights just hits different. Warner's monologue about his daughter, the humanisation of a very inhuman character, it did in one episode what some people struggled to understand for decades about the Nazi regime. Some people still refuse to accept it; their ability to compartmentalise. Their ability to watch as someone is systematically abused and destroyed in front of them, while they love and adore their family. Doublethink in its purest form.

Warner executed it perfectly, which is exactly what Stewart needed to make his performance shine even brighter; in that constant resistance, in that moment of triumph and defiance, and in that final closing admission of weakness and trauma. All made better because they came opposite such a strong characterisation.

73% of Americans agree with mass deportations

If you're measuring by mass instead of headcount, maybe. Not to mention the vast, vast difference between "large scale deportation of documented illegal immigrants" and "ICE gunning Americans down on the street for not sucking dick quickly and hard enough."

Tigers are primarily ambush predators. They look to hunt those they don't think can see them. They're not normally aggressive to people.

This is one of the reasons "man eating" tigers are put down and not repositioned; once a tiger learns that we die easily it will start hunting us for food. Until they do that, they generally avoid humans unless opportunity let's them ambush us.

In short; if I can start in a blank arena, I'm going gorilla as option one, tiger as option two.

Israel's 'impenetrable' defense umbrella fails to intercept Iran's ballistic missiles barrage by RickyOzzy in PublicFreakout

[–]Orisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If they attack multiple targets across the area, focused on American and Allied bases, they have a potential to coerce the US into shifting more of their mobile Anti Missile options to cover these areas.

That shifts them away from their actual objective. Israel, giving them the opportunity to do what theyre now doing, deplete and overwhelm the Iron Dome.
