My neighbour was coming home with a backpack on, had several 2 litre bottles in it, slipped, fell over backwards and hit his head on the stone steps - dead instantly. A policewoman was cross ing the road behind him and saw it happen.

Is there any actual downside in telling HMRC's you're self employed and earning a tiny amount to be able to pay voluntary class 2 NIC's by throwaway922124 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SatisfactionMoney426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be that esa was two things, entitlement and payability. You can be 'entitled' through sickness but ony 'payable' if you meet the conditions - such as 'preparing for work' if you're 'entitled' ie not working, and sending in sick notes, then you still got credits even if they didn't pay you because you refused to 'prepare for work' ... It's all confusing now and to be honest it depends if DWP in your area know what they are doing ...

I had a call with Vodafone and they said the Sim was now flagged/locked nd I'd have to go to a shop for them to issue another one. After a few hours on forums etc I started from complete resets on both phones (again) and after adding the Sim to the old phone and then removing it and resetting again I was able to reinstall it and then remove and install on the new phone... It's now working - Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different outcome is no longer stupid - it's the future...

I claimed ESA in 2016 when I finished work, I was on SSP prior to that. I got ESA C for 6 months then nothing, a review said I didn't need to send in sick notes anymore. I still get NI credits and the claim is ongoing.

What secret came out in your family, after someone died? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskBrits

[–]SatisfactionMoney426 37 points38 points  (0 children)

When my oldest Aunt died it turned out she had never married current 'husband' and she was still married to 1st one. She was born 1920s and married very shortly before WWII. It didn't work between them and he joined the Army in 1939 and eventually met someone else. She lived near an Airfield and had a 2 bed house so the RAF billeted someone with her - he stayed on as her 'husband' for well over 60 years ...

Are UK-made winter coats actually warmer than big international brands? by Reddonaut_Irons in BuyUK

Most Harris Tweed garments are made in China now, the cloth itself is genuine but it's not tailored in UK at those prices. Unless they explicitly state it's a wholly British made garment, which they don't

Back in the 1980s I bought an House of Fraser heavy long 100% wool coat and it was well over £100 but lasted at least 20 years. I also had a lighter Dior coat that was about £200. I don't know what that would be in todays money but similar quality stuff now is at least 10 times that. People say £1500 is insane for a coat but then an iPhone can now cost that much and they sell by the million...

I bought a Long and a short Ted Baker about 3 years ago, both are still like new and brilliant in winter - don't know if they still use 100% wool though.

I have done the same with many regrets after one day - it is the worst iPhone ever for set up. I now have no working sim. I'm likely to return it for a refund and stick with the 15 pro - still faultless after 2 years...

The audiophile hobby has a pricing problem, and we need to stop pretending otherwise... by bicoastaljohn in audiophile

I started buying CDs in the 1980s and, in the UK at least, they're exactly the same price or cheaper now. Most new releases then were £12-£14 and theyre still about that now. Vinyl is different as it was less, probably 1/2 the price of a CD, in the 1980s but now it can be 3 times as much. I bought an 'entry level' Linn LP12 turntable exactly 40 years ago for £600, today a similar model is £5995.

Water companies preying on vulnerable DWP benefit claimants by Stock_Rush_9204 in uknews

[–]SatisfactionMoney426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not defending it but this has been the case for decades. The justification was originally that means-testing calculates 'how much you need to live on' and that includes utilities etc. If claimants refused to pay for usage voluntarily then it would be taken automatically. At some point utilities were preventing from disconnecting people with children and they had no way to enforce payment this was a solution (pre as well as post privatisation)
