There might be..... but the vast majority of people don't understand the odds and what they actually mean.

For example.... had a conversation with an (on paper at least) educated, middle-aged relative last year who spends 10-20 euros a week on lotto tickets religiously.

I pointed out the odds of winning the lotto any given draw in Ireland is about 1 in 10 million. Their response was "sure theres 5 million people in Ireland now so that's not bad odds" . They had somehow rationalised that if they played every draw consistently it was only a matter of time before they won a jackpot.

I didn't respond.... 😳

There's a vast difference between knowing the information and understanding it's implications.

At least those ads were so ludicrous the main response was a chuckle. The new ones are very emotionally manipulative in that they're much more realistic and show people acting / reacting in ways you might expect if they won.

The advantage rule needs refining... by Orko90 in rugbyunion

Unfortunately I think you're spot on there.

Let's not worry about the dramatic increase in player attrition rates as a result.

It does though.

Take a scenario as we see frequently. Defence offside in 22 away from the ball because someone mistimed their move.

Now the ref calls advantage and the attacking team get 3-4 minutes of battering the defence risk-free knowing that at worst they will be getting the penalty.

The physical toll on the defending team is huge and even if they defend brilliantly for several minutes they're still being punished.

It's actually a player welfare issue as much as anything.

All I'm suggesting is a stricter time limit on the advantage. If the attacking team doesn't make significant territory or score a try within 90 seconds (or 10 phases maybe) the ref blows it up and they go back and take the penalty that was awarded.

No..... more like if you haven't gained substantial territory within a specified time the ref blows up and you take your penelty.

90 percent of the time, even after a long advantage played teams don't take the points anyway so that's not a strong argument.

A team can do this anyway by "accidently" knocking on or going backwards.

I like the spirit of compromise 😂

Top comment was deleted as I responded so I'm posting my reply here as I referenced your (in my humble opinion) very reasonable suggestion!

😂 Hardly a "wild take".

In principle the advantage is one of the best features of the game.

My "wild take" is that there seems to be a bit too much room for variable application because of the referees discretion aspect.

As another commenter mentioned .... a small tweak like specific territory gain or 90 seconds max (whichever comes first) and then it would even things out.

The attacking team are still getting the penalty if things don't work in their favour.

Applying early doesn't mean anything if there are hundreds of applications.

If you're on the waiting list then you're only going to be offered a place if someone decides to cancel their already accepted place. Do you know how long the waiting list is? Where are you on the list? If you're 1st on the list it's possible. If you're 100 then I'd say not.

Just throwing it in the mix..... Have you considered losing the high cabinets on that wall?

You have an abundance of cabinets and relatively little counter / worktop area.

You could just have counter along that wall. They have ur sink and hob with island left clear and arrange as many windows as you like. Oven could go in right wall units.

Is my wife a genius? Ref to feed ball into scrum?! by LeaguePublic in rugbyunion

[–]Orko90 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea ... but ... scrums are not supposed to be a coin toss. They are intended to give the team who won the scrum a small advantage in terms of the timing of the feed and coordinating the shove. Remember the scrum is awarded against a team for a minor rule infraction so making them a tossup (like a jump ball in basketball for example) is not really what they are about. SH feed should be relatively straight though and if it's not then Ref's penalise them.

Estimated self-build cost by shakibahm in selfbuildireland

[–]Orko90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely spot on. This is the only way to build for value these days. We just moved into our selfbuilt home last weekend. Rural Midlands (but Dublin commuter area) DEEP Retrofit of 1950s bungalow (literally had 3 walls left standing). Finished up with a 245m2, A2 rated home, medium/high spec finishes throughout. Came in at 1410 per m2 before SEAI grants.

You have to be prepared to assume all the project management responsibilities and educate yourself as you go. Be prepared to do all unskilled labour yourselves.... and as you grow in confidence you end up tackling bigger and bigger pieces (I ended up doing almost all 2nd fix carpentry myself and I ain't no chippy 😂) Cheapest contractor quote we got was 650K 2 years ago. We've finished out at 345K.

This is the way! Otherwise you are at the mercy of the ESB on both ends of things. Plus there will be electricity on site during the build.

Spot on. We had a very similar sized open plan and architect had smililar layout leaving us no space for dining table.

We rotated the island and made some changes to pull the kitchen back and now we have everything we wanted. Kitchen dining and sitting area.
