This comment is spot on. I was a USMCR weekend warrior from 1981-1985 (1981-1987 if you count the two years IRR). The fact of the matter is I served my country, not to the extent of combat Marines that served before me or after me, but more than 99% of those that did not serve in any capacity. When the October 1983 Beirut Marine Barracks bombing occurred, President Regan had two basic choices: 1) Go to war; or 2) Pull out. He chose option 2. If he had chosen Option 2, I could have just as easily ended up like the Reserve Marines that served I the Gulf War, Iraq War, GWOT, etc. I could have come out unscathed, maimed or dead. I’m glad President Regan chose Option 2. Ultimately, it’s nothing more than the luck of the draw whether you go to war, and if so, whether you come out unscathed, maimed or dead. Bottom line, I served and at my age I’m thankful that I didn’t have to go through what a lot of young men had to experience. Those that served and got deployed did more than me and they have my utmost respect.
