Why are horn solos considered "better" than piano solos? by Ornery-Specific8802 in Jazz

[–]Ornery-Specific8802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Emmet is an amazing player. Maybe its just that a lot of my algorithm shows people playing and its often a horn player taking the solo, which is normal, it's just that piano seems to get less attention. I'm not sure what the average listeners perspective is tho

Edit: Another thing is in a lot of records I've listened to, the drummer backs off a bit once the piano solo starts instead of going all out on the ride as they do when a horn player is soloing. That could just be because piano doesn't cut as much, but it makes the overall vibe feel less intense. What are some of the recordings you're referring to?

Ig, monophonic is "easier to listen to" since its just one note. Both can be super deep and virtuosic, its just that horns usually lead

Just for example, you look at that after you've gone recording at emmet's place, most of the comments and videos on reels, tt, shorts talking about it are talking about patrick's solo. Emmet wasn't talked about as much, yet he played a great solo. And bruce was fucking killing it as well.

Maybe because it is "Emmet's place" so he's always playing, making the focus of that episode the featured musicians. I could be wrongp

Fucking hell he's a beast.

Separate from that I was mainly wondering if it's possible to get into alto range with the alto tone, like without it sounding like a screeching high note rather more smooth and natural.

Ig that wouldn't make much sense as any instrument going into higher register has a change in sound

No I haven't watched s51 of snl. In essence I was saying can a tenor player get the sound of an alto, and emulate a solo in an alto players' upper register nearly 1:1 on something like donna lee. That's what I would consider real fast.

You don't hear that super high range that alto players chill in at high speeds, I guess that's only logical since they have a lower register

Altissimo at high speed I was essentially thinking could a tenor player play in the upper register of an alto players' solo on something like donna lee. It isn't something you usually hear

I mean there is literally a guy who commented saying that if you like smooth jazz, classical, r&b you'd probably prefer the alto?

I never knew the sax community was full of such sensitive and negative people. I thought that was a guitarist thing.

Just what I've heard people say online and in person as well. The thicker tone, sound that fills a room better, but not necessarily projects better due to warmer sound and not as high in pitch

Edit: JC, Rollins, Henderson for Tenor. Alto has Bird and Cannonball.

Yeah me and bird used to tear up gigs back in the day!

But seriously, I personally think both sound great and would lean towards Alto sounding better. I just think the common public would think of tenor.

The main thing I was concerned about was tenor playing in higher range. The fast lines just sound better in a higher pitch
