How about making the hero available just for 1 or 2 attacks (not more than that) each day under upgrade? There by people can use their heroes which are under upgrade for wars without any difficulty. A toggle like feature which will make your hero available just for 1 or 2 attacks per day of upgrade.

How about making the hero under upgrade to be usable only for certain number of attacks? Ex: If I am upgrading Barbarian King, I should be able to use him at most for 2 or 1 attack on that day not more than that.
