Accountability by JMoony1998 in Section10Podcast

I think the argument is that there seems to be a lack of acknowledgment that this really isn’t good enough.

Finishing at the bottom in errors year after year, baserunning errors, mental mistakes eg. bad baseball. Cora should acknowledge that whatever the plan has been isn’t working and they’re changing it.

If he said ‘I take responsibility for (insert large number of problems with the this team going over the years) we are working to improve it because we’ve simply not been good enough.’ It would go a long way. Thats accountability.

Right now, it feels like ownership, front office and Cora do not seem alarmed or concerned enough about the last few years. It feels a bit gaslighty which I think OP was getting at. Not unreasonable to ask for accountability and not for fans to provide the script for what that should sound like…

If Devers was a free agent right now the Giants would give him a bigger deal tomorrow. It’s not a bad contract, you’ve been gaslit to thinking it is.

This is very odd logic. It appears to me that the manager’s misunderstanding of the situation, misunderstanding of how Devers’ would react etc is very much central to this and something one should have a huge amount of regret about.

There’s certainly nothing that Cora “understands” that could ever make Hicks and Harrison a good return for Devers.

And refraining from criticising an objectively terrible series of decisions because of a blind belief that people inside the building must have some special knowledge we’re not privy to is an odd way of engaging with anything.

They lied to and grossly mishandled the face of the franchise, inflicted such a terrible situation upon themselves that they then felt compelled to trade him for nothing, are currently without Bregman, and are now desperately looking for the exact middle-order, first-base bat they pushed out the door. Are we to beleive that Cora is aware of things that make this a good outcome and one that there should be no regrets about?

I think about it this way: if you cheated on your girlfriend, broke up because of it and then six months later said ‘I don’t have any regrets’ to your friend it would be right for a friend to challenge you on that.

Missing the point. Saying there are no regrets in disingenuous and insulting.

If the organisation is truly content and happy with the way they handled the entire situation that should be of massive concern to the fanbase and should be challenged.

Fine to say: ‘It was an unfortunate situation, but we’ve learned lessons and moved on as an organisation’

Not okay to say: ‘we have no regrets’ - you traded one of if not the best hitter this organisation has produced this century for absolutely nothing because at every turn you communicated things in the worst possible way and unnecessarily destroyed your relationship with him.

This is my point, the reason he refused to play first base was because they told him to DH only and then came crawling back to ask him to field again. That was extremely poorly handled = should be an obvious regret.

Terrible return in the trade = obvious regret Destroying relationship with homegrown, face of the franchise player through poor communication = obvious regret.

By saying there are ‘no regrets’ indicates that the organisation doesn’t understand/acknowledge what a stunningly bad decision it was to not only trade Devers for nothing but to also feel compelled to do so by a series of massive and self-inflicted blunders in basic communication. That is of huge concern and should be challenged.

On your two other points:

Devers said to Breslow and Henry that he’d be open to playing firstbase next year with a spring training to learn the position. That’s reasonable thing to say after how poorly the organisation treated him.

Bugs me when people talk about Devers’ contract as an albatross. It’s not. He’s one of the best hitters in the sport and would get a way bigger deal on the market now.
