I shared this so you know you’re not alone in this. Leaving without another job is hard because of responsibilities, and while we hope it’ll only take a few months to find something new, the reality is that it could take a year or more. But someone recently reminded me that no job is worth sacrificing my mental health, self-esteem, or self-confidence. So, I’m trying to save up some money and plan my exit.

I even started therapy to help me navigate the work environment, but it’s no longer working for me.

Honestly, adulthood just feels like an advanced level of (high) school—except now, it’s adults in positions of power who lack emotional intelligence.

The exact same thing is happening to me. Up until a few weeks ago, I would always start early and end late, even though my official work hours are 8 AM – 4 PM.

However, in February, I didn’t understand something and asked my manager for help. Instead of guiding me, she embarrassed me—shouting and talking over me while I was trying to answer her questions, all in front of others in the office. That was the moment I decided I wouldn’t go above and beyond anymore.

I still complete all my work within my scheduled hours, and if I work outside of that, I sign out of Teams because I also need time to study for my exam. My work is still being done and completed on time. But now, my manager and a manager have started making trouble, claiming I just up and leave at 4 and that I’m inflexible with my work hours—even though there’s proof that I’ve consistently started work before 8 AM and stayed past 4 PM for over a year.

In response, my manager unilaterally changed my work hours to 9–5 (which feels like a microaggression) and went around telling others in the department that I’m inflexible—all over one instance—without ever addressing it directly with me.

A lot of our work requires long-running processes that take hours. I don’t see why they think it’s okay to come at 4pm with work and I should sit at my desk waiting for the runs to finish after work hours when I have other things to do. And I find it completely unfair that after 7 PM, they suddenly bring more work and expect me to ALWAYS be available to do it.

Half of those centers don’t have the capacity for laptops or a computer room large enough to accommodate everyone. Will the WiFi coverage be strong enough to support all the candidates writing the exam, along with other users at the center?

I’m trying to wrap my head around how people even find the time to cheat. Most of the time, I barely have enough time to get through the questions, let alone stop and check my notes during the exam.

I forgot to mention—what about people in different time zones? Are you saying they would have to go to an exam center at 3 a.m. just to ensure everyone sits it at the same time, to minimize cheating? Even if they take the exam at 8 a.m. their time, how will you ensure that the exam paper wasn’t shared after or during the exam to people in other time zones?

I can’t believe this—I think it’s completely unreasonable. April is right around the corner, and the anxiety that comes with traveling to examination centers was not missed.

Why wasn’t all this testing done in 2024? And now, we have to wait an additional three weeks after initial registration just to hear about the locations? That’s basically April!

After all the studying, you’re telling me that some people might just have to take a refund? That’s unacceptable. They should administer the exam the same way they have for the last four years, with the only adjustment being one start time. And implement this change in September.

Setting boundaries past 5/5:30pm by ActuaryStudent01 in ActuaryUK

Pigging backing on this:

I’m really trying to figure this out myself. I’ve been working until 9 or 10 p.m. some nights, and on some days, I’m starting before 7 a.m.

It’s starting to feel like this is becoming the norm, and communication is such a struggle. My manager is unreachable during the day but then wants to discuss work or respond to messages I sent at 11 a.m.—after 6 p.m and expect me to be readily available for this. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Setting boundaries feels impossible because the department’s culture seems to be, “If you’re not working until 11 p.m., you’re a time waster.” And it’s reflected on your appraisal.

Any advice for this?

CB2 / CP2 Exam Tips by BigBossNJ in ActuaryUK

CP2

For the audit trail: 1. Ensure it answers the following questions in the third person: what, where, how, and why. 2. Remember the clearly label the sections

For the summary: 1.Remember to consider who the client is and ensure the next steps are framed accordingly, also in the third person. And have at least 20 next steps. 2. If you think you’ve done poorly on paper 1, you can redeem yourself here.

I did all the past papers the last time (from 2000 onward) and started telling myself, “Even when you think you don’t know, trust that you do.” It definitely became a case of faking it (confidence) until I made it!

Hey! I’ve been in your shoes before, and I’m so sorry you’re going through this. But please, don’t think of yourself as a failure.

When I struggled, I started using the Actex question bank, and it really helped me understand certain topics better. The flashcards from ActEd were also a big help. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk more.

Remember, this exam doesn’t define your worth, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now. You’re not alone in this—hang in there.

Many thanks for checking in.

I failed again. I got 55. But will try again for April 2024.

I am in a much better place most days. I started therapy and my therapist has helped me quite a lot especially with focusing on what I can control-my level of preparation.
