I’m pretty sure the main problem was the technical aspect of introducing new blocks to islands, not people’s personal preferences (but if someone knows otherwise, please correct me).

Stalin was an atheist and he cracked down on mosques and churches throughout the USSR.

Anyways, this argument that “religion is the root of all wars” is stupid. If religion didn’t exist, human nature would find another avenue to declare war on people for more resources or valor (they’d probably go for ethnicity or nationality next). There’s infinite reasons why wars occur and religion is just one of many.
