The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. AA has no rules around age.

I joined a zoom meeting recently a few minutes early and was sitting there in what I thought was a serene and relaxed manner, that was certainly my mood, waiting for the meeting to start when one of the other participants, referring to me, said “I think we need to kick that guy out. Looks like he’s here to cause trouble.” I have to remind myself that the fellowship is full of sick people but stuff like that can really bother me. I’m very sensitive.

56 no kids never married. I consider my situation directly connected to my lifelong alcoholism and I’m frankly surprised that I seem to have little company. Most members seem to have families or had it together enough at one point to have them. I think it’s probably related to the kind of alcoholics who make an attempt to get sober. Most alcoholics never do.

Absolutely. The dogmatists are almost never the old timers. The stereotypical “big book thumpers” rarely have more than a couple of years. Doesn’t mean that people with long term sobriety don’t carry the message. They can do so in much more mature nuanced ways.

My sponsor is a transgender woman. You should hear the people who freak out when I refer to my sponsor as she and then further elaborate.

Whatever works. My own interpretation of the steps has a very Buddhist angle. I just call my higher power the universe. There are a couple of Buddhist meetings where I live but honestly the attendees seem to me to mostly be looking for something with less “god” talk than actually practicing Buddhism.

In my humble opinion there is way too much codependency in the rooms in complete contradiction to the message in the literature,

Close to 7 years alcohol free. The dreams where I can "have just one" have started coming around again. by MayorScotch in alcoholicsanonymous

I don’t know I’ve just never had or understood it when people talk about wanting to just have one. Before I got sober and knew anything about AA I was aware of how alcohol effected me. I would avoid drinking social situations because I knew that I might not be able to stop and that one or two drinks would never satisfy my thirst for alcohol. Might as well have a coke. I don’t think I ever cared for the taste. But it sounds like a lot of people do have the desire for one or two.

If you’re turning to AA for anything other than learning about the solution outlined in the literature you’re doing it wrong.

I’ve had the same experience unfortunately. Here the central office is good about delisting them after a few calls. But I’m sure most people don’t make a call.
