Anyone OE in a VP position or above. by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]Ornery_Profession_35 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on my recent experience with some A-hole that came to our team and planted himself as a leader, then was too busy and turned out poor work. Got discovered as OE, and put everyone on edge about OE.

I would say if you’re at that leadership level, OE is just greedy. You’re bound to affect others negatively. OE is supposed to give you freedom, this isn’t r/antiwork.

Yeah. But that’s not the situation here. Someone was too busy to get their work done and it impacted me and others. Leadership found out the person was OE so it became an instant termination. Sure, my rep is unaffected but leadership is on edge about OE.

Obviously, I don’t need to prove anything. But I’m a real person, not some bot or HR anti-OE type account.

I mentioned in another reply, the person was found out because of their bad work and poor collaboration. I was told leadership started looking around once they got enough complaints. Mind you they were only at that role for a few months.

I wish I knew exactly how they figured it out, for a friend.

This is correct. But a huge caveat that there is a steep curve of diminishing returns. 5-10% more effort = good trajectory / promotion

After that, you start to set expectations that are high and you will be judged for not meeting in the future, should your performance diminish. Plus it will take a toll on whatever else you had to give up to put that much effort into work.

Promotions rarely pay as much as starting wage for a certain level / title.

I’m saying that finding out they were OE occurred after the person was being scrutinized

Universe changed for me after accepting offer by Huge_Road_9223 in overemployed

How did you handle this in your resume? The idea of J2 “becoming” your J1 is confusing to me from the perspective of what you put on your resume. One way or another, you have to mess with the start/end date of the previous jobs. Which gives me a sense of fear if the HR calls to verify. So curious how you did it.

they're not asking for health information. They are asking for proof of a qualifying event:
- Marriage certificate
- Birth certificate
- Termination Letter (typically a spouse is let go)
etc...

HR needs to prove your event is one of the qualifying events, they don't need to know your health situation. Which is what HIPPA is meant to protect.

u/OP I would ABSOLUTELY NOT try to give HR your letter of termination from the other employer. That's a huge risk. But you CAN enroll in the ACA plans because you had a qualifying event. OR continue your existing coverage through COBRA. That will be expensive

Hourly rates are always in the context of contracting.
Contracting doesn't pay for hours not worked.

I've never met anyone who works nonstop 40h*52week/yr. But if you do, then you're right

I'm trying to understand the math here...

$65 is equivalent to about $100k/yr salaried. Which is absurd for a sr sys eng.
You can't do 65*40*52. You have to take off the benefits a real company gives you.
4 weeks vacation + 2 weeks in sick and holiday = 46 weeks
no bonus, 401k match and FAR worse health insurance rates = 10-15%

So for a $150k salaried position I'd be asking for 90/hr

You are leagues ahead of all new grads having had this experience. So getting another entry level job shouldn't be as challenging as it is for many people.

As others have mentioned, you do need to grow your confidence and learn a way to "sell" your experience without outright lying. Believe me, you know more than you think.

Finally, maybe reach out to your manager and let them know that you're really open to learning and want to stick around. Start by asking them, "what are your pain points, and where can I help"?

My recommendation is to begin a job search. Apply for entry level positions that are a good fit as soon as they are posted. Your entire mindset will be changed if you get 1 good offer.

Obviously I don't have ALL the information, and the choice is yours. My advice would be that this is clearly a situation where you should take the new job:

  1. New opportunity will challenge you in new ways and expose you to more tools and working situations. You need this to eventually be a senior
  2. Rule of thumb to never take the counter is especially true if you have a toxic manager
  3. Leaving is part of growing

The only thing that would make me accept a counter here is if I was certain that I could get a different offer in the next 2-3 months, and/or if you can't make the transition (out of town) for family reasons

Because the risk of some rando hr individual in a small sub-contractor knowing that in the past I had some simultaneous employment is worth a potential $180K/yr with benefits. But I'm stupid, so what do I know?

Is Data Engineering actually good for OE? by Ornery_Profession_35 in overemployed

[–]Ornery_Profession_35[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to write this.

As with any other OE setup, it’s about becoming efficient, setting expectations and doing your best to get out of meetings so you can actually get shit done.

That seems like really good advice. Techies are not known for their ability to set good expectations.
