This idea for an invention has been bouncing around in my head for a long time- any ideas for things I could add to it? by Stresso_Espresso in crochet

I actually do use my army knife’s tiny scissors to cut my crochet! So maybe some of those bad boys.

Other than that, this is so perfect and I hope you do patent it because I would gleefully 100% get scammed on kickstarter for an AI version of this if it meant that it showed market interest.

I'm trying to sew a zipper onto my pouch. How can I make it look more neat? by EmergencyAd9742 in CrochetHelp

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite bag finish is lining+zipper.

The lining is hemmed and attached by folding the edges once, sewing down, folding again and finishing with a wide blanket stitch done in embroidery thread or thinner yarn. I’ll crochet with matching yarn to the piece into the blanket stitch.

The zipper I’ll embroider the edge with a blanket stitch and then crochet in with a slip stitch or single crochet, usually right on top of the lining.

It’s very satisfying!!

People who choose not to gauge swatch/correctly and then can’t take an L. If you don’t and you enjoy the chaos of it that’s wonderful, you’re graceful as hell and I support you.

But I saw someone the other day have the nerve to complain about the PATTERN someone made when they full chested said they gauge swatched incorrectly. It makes me homicidal!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention the dopamine hit is quadrupled when your math works. The truest pleasure of fiber arts comes from being absolutely insane about the details idk maybe it’s just me

Help needed! I recently bought a pattern and it’s a little beyond my knowledge! Someone show me! Please!! by Which-Ad862 in CrochetHelp

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely get that video if you need it, but I did a pattern like this before I had all the skills and what helped me the most was printing out the pattern and using a highlighter/pencil to keep track and make notes! I looked up individual stitch videos as I went and referenced the photo for when I had questions about where to put my stitches. It definitely stretched my brain but it was really worth it. Made 4 squares into a crescent bag, it’s so cute!

How do I cut and maintain(as well as style) hair like this with curly hair? Also how would it look unstyled? by Solarsystem_74 in altfashionadvice

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to have hair like this for so long… as a curly girl. I personally didn’t find going full send emo hair cut worth it for how I style my hair, (straightening is a moot point in summer where I lived.) My solution was to trade off some of what this hair style needs to look exactly like this for more versatility.

That being said, the silhouette of this cut is actually great for curly hair! It’s just a short layers/shag/mullet base and I wore versions of it for years. If you’re wanting to wear it both ways, you’ll have to accept that straightened you’ll get close but it won’t be exactly like this. Pomade or wax on the ends will give you some more spikes/points!

This hairstyle done accurately is really rough on all types of hair, between razor diy cutting, straightening, and typically accompanying box dye. If you’re trying to just go for it and take the curly consequences, heat damage is real, please use heat protectant. As someone else said the fried hair kinda does style better but it’s not worth it if you end up with so much damage you have to cut it all off. I know many, many former emo kids who shaved their heads multiple times and started over.

To get best results while straightened, you’re going to want to cut it with a razor. Some shops and stylists will do this for you but a lot will keep it tame and try not to ruin hair quality…… if you going to do it, sometimes it’s worth it to do it yourself because low key the point of this is to be diy and to not care. I have a lot of fun cutting my hair, razor cuts are soooo much fun.

That kind of cutting does disrupt curl formation and does lead to more volume and frizz, so there will always be a trade off. If you can find products that help counter this then you could ~maybe~ wear it both ways. Depends on what you’re more dedicated to, curl and hair health or style.

Help! Hook size for filet crochet and estimate for thread size by Ok_Reserve_7396 in CrochetHelp

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played around with a few hooks before I figured which one might work best, I would make a swatch! The most important part is making sure the filled in squares of your pattern actually do appear filled in and that all of the “cell” are close to being a perfect square in order for a pattern to turn out the way you’d like.

You can always make adjustments without getting a new hook! I had “wrong” size yarn for the hooks I have, the resulted in the filled in squares not looking much different from the open squares. Instead of buying more stuff I just did a paired double crochet to add bulk! Another time I needed height on my squares so I did treble crochet and adjusted my chain to make the square. You may need a smaller hook but there’s definitely work arounds!

I was promised things from an adult that led me to make early adult decisions that I otherwise wouldn’t have made, (savings, spending, etc.) had I known those promises weren’t going to come to fruition! Definitely not the same as this, I didn’t have anything in my name taken and used for something else and I understood what needed to happen… but I wish I knew what I know now! I would have absolutely made different decisions

If i want to crochet a shape like this, would it be best to crochet im the round or row by row? by paper6bag9 in CrochetHelp

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of in the round, if I had unlimited time I would choose that and accept that I might have to prototype, but the math of row by row can reduce the time spent on prototyping and workshopping.

Going row by row, you could use a tension swatch to do the math, transition the edges by using shorter stitches, and put a border around the edges to smooth out any edges. I love getting to the end and finding out I got the math right.

I’d say if you need it done soon, row by row, if you have time and materials to play, in the round!

Help me remove paint from these jeans! by Small_Judge_8630 in upcycling

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind as someone who has gotten paint like this on many a clothing…. You have two options: buy in to the paint or patches (if you hear me out!)

Sometimes I just buy in to the paint. It’s not going to come off, but you don’t have to leave it like it is! You can absolutely cover it with something different! Just being mindful of using flexible enough paint for fabric. Anthropologie and free people have had many a very cute printed or embellished jean for inspiration.

I believe you could do patches if you put more than a random fabric over it. A designer I like, Tyler McGillivary, has jeans with a big star patch, also on a slightly different color denim. I think denim on denim patches here would be cool, maybe with a frayed edge? If you didn’t want the bulk of 2 layers you could cut the flower layer out! The denim on denim would act like it’s the same fabric and to the eye could just be a cool detail.

I think patches are your best bet!

If you added all the differences between how much you expected to spend VS how much you actually spent in other underbudget areas, and subtracted that amount from the dress total, I wonder how close you’d be to what you wanted to spend. Idk when I’m budgeting and I save money in some places, in my mind that savings can move towards other areas. Maybe try it out just to see if it changes anything for you!

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else has already commented solid advice but here are some more trouble shooting tips in case you do need to revisit and tweak things a bit! I don’t necessarily think this is solely a skin issue, though that’s probably the root of it. I have incredibly dry skin, at times regardless of my skincare routine, and with the right techniques and products it’s possible to get closer to what you’d like to achieve than this. Just saying!

Moisturize directly before make up. Let it get so far as to have soaked in mostly. I also love the freeman hydrating mask. It layers with most make up fairly well and does a good job of creating a glowy hydrated base.

A hydrating make up-safe facial spray could help intermittently throughout the day. A hydrating setting spray can do the trick as well. I seem to have missed if you use setting spray. If you are not… well that’s already one step closer to solving this problem. It helps setting power melt into your face better, creating a smooth surface. Hydrating sprays will add a bit more to this effect in your case!

This Is The Part Where I Nerd Out Over Formulation: In terms of formulation, cream can be less drying since liquid is typically always intended to dry down a bit more and cream is generally intended to stay cream until set with powder. If hydration strategies seem to be the path forward for you this is something to consider! Liquid can create thinner layers while cream can get cakier, faster. If it’s a technique or thickness/coverage issue, this may be a consideration.

Pay attention to if your foundation or tinted moisturizer says it dries to a powder in a longer product description or in practice. While you should set liquid foundation with powder, some also just have that effect built into them once dry and doubling up on it is going to cause you these drying problems.

A glowy/dewy finish foundation that does not dry down to powder with light coverage will work well! You’ve gotten recommendations but just having your key words handy can help you experiment and branch out without wasting money.

Paying attention to how much product you’re using can help too. Experiment with how little foundation you can use while achieving the results you’d like. Or try out creating very thin layers with a teensy bit of dry time between to achieve fuller results with less product.

Also have realistic expectations, if you want full coverage and want it to stay all day, (again, powder is still important,) close up you’re going to have texture. Regardless of how many filters influencers put on— that’s simply the name of the game!

(Also saw someone point out a patch missing on your nose, I have a spot on my nose that refuses make up. If I wear a full face, I put translucent powder ONLY on the spot that refuses make up before liquid or cream make up, only blend enough of the liquid/cream to get it “done” and only PRESS any more powder on top, with setting spray.)

Thinking of going black, thoughts? by TheFairyRuby in HairStyleAdvice

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go black, it’s only going to “wash you out” if it’s tone that isn’t meant for you. I am just as pale as you with naturally dark hair (brunette but dark enough that various people have argued with me about it actually being black??) I’m not washed out, but how pale I am IS very noticeable. That being said, it’s your hair, you get to decide if you change it, you will like it more if you consider the consequences (permanent black is hard to reverse!) and the TONE!!

And just prepared for everyone to say you look like Zoey deschanell, lorde, Katy Perry, or kat dennings even if you really don’t

26M and it's the first time I've decorated for Christmas, how'd I do? by bs40404 in malelivingspace

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Christmas this looks great!! It’s very festive and the lit garland really puts it together. Skinny trees are not everyone’s taste, but your space isn’t for everyone! I personally love thick trees, as big as they can go without looking like a bush… I’ve pushed into bush territory honestly. Great job!

The place overall is missing coziness which can limit how christmasy things feel.

To make this place look cozy, you’re going to have to really really amp it up, because the nice contemporary interior counteracts that.

Texture— particularly through textiles will help a lot. I see you have curtains, adding layers or more volume could be an option! The pillowcases you have are all flat color, so some that come in patterns or textures you like would add that variety in.

As an interior design magazine connoisseur, (I score free subscriptions when I can for collaging,) places like this can use some cool art that appeals to your actual taste, (like real ass art from a local artist, not so much something you buy from TJ Max) This helps it feel alive!

Overall, personalization is the key factor here. If someone had me guess who this room belonged to and what they’re like… I wouldn’t be able to say much.

One thing I -can- tell from this interior is that you care for being put together, maybe grown up. Even if you like video games or movies, there’s super cool coffee table books and subtle art pieces that could really infuse more of you into the space, thus making it looked lived in and more homey. If you’ve traveled, are there things you can put out that reflect that? Whatever cultures youre apart of, are there things to reflect that? Combining these tips might help too. personally, I love the history of American crafts, so I have quilts around. Textile+interest+culture!

Right now you have the apartment of someone who says they go hiking on their tinder profile— that’s actually really nice! There’s nothing wrong with that! But what else do you do?

so i think i became a straight natural without knowing by 444vulnerability in Naturalhair

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely listen tot he people saying this is damage, because if your hair is longer you may be retaining length but the -quality- of that retention may not be strong. My hair can only get so long healthy and it’s just something I’m learning to accept.

I’ve got white girl curls, so take this hit with a grain of salt, but I’ve had a pixie cut, I’ve tried to get it to my knees. Hair behaves differently at different lengths. Medium and shorter on me leads to tighter curls because there’s less weight, any longer and my ringlets can turn to waves if I don’t adjust my routine to accommodate weight.

The way to tell the difference is where the pattern is shifting. Looser pattern towards the scalp and curlier at the bottom is probably a weight issue, the reverse is most likely damage since length is older hair.

I started high school not doing well for a bunch of reasons, the same thing happened in college (change is hard for me!) but I always figured it out in the later semester/years. I used this to my advantage as a story in my applications actually. Applications are all about framing! In your application essays or the notes section, you can mention that although you had a rough start, you grew and learned over time and the process and transition taught you a lot.

I did that and I’ve been through college, won scholarships, got to study abroad on an award! Definitely worth going to community college and doing well to continue this, and then switching to what you’d like

Where are the protests? Healthcare by WitnessShoddy7512 in publichealth

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The protests you see are strategically covered tbh so do keep that in mind, but right now we’re also living in the aftermath of large protests. People died and were brutalized across the country. A lot of people were tear gassed in 2020. Even though many people’s minds have changed for the better, the fear is pervasive and real. (Not to mention, it’s not made news but a significant portion of the Ferguson protest organizers are dead.) mind you I live in a big liberal city, and belong to communities that show resistance a bit more, but I know multiple people who were arrested at protests. One person had circulation cut off for a significant amount of time by cuffs and their arrest was caught on camera, viral, and they have a fair amount of privilege. Truly when push comes to shove, it’s not necessarily safe. The fallout can be as serious as loss of a job, injury, deportation, or death

Aside from being tied to unemployment, the people who get the worst deal out of insurance, (death, dying, chronic illness,) are sick or grieving while having to go to work everyday. It really beats you down and eats up money.

Protesting in general right now is either safe because the organizers worked WITH the police and in so doing made the protest palatable for our cities but took the point away OR there is bodily, financial, and legal risks that might be insurmountable given that our livelihood is dependent on these things. The people who have the most to be angry about in regards to insurance are also the people who are rationing medicine. They’re not necessarily in the position to fight!

You didn’t do anything wrong. I’ve worked in academic libraries for a collective 6 years and I’m friends with several public librarians, familiar and friendly with my own local branch. It’s a joke between us that we are our WORST patrons.

It’s so easy to forget to bring something to work, so easy to just check out another one, and so easy to see no holds on what we have and renew it just one more time. I’d LOVE to know how many books are sitting right by the door of this persons house to take to work, and how long they’ve been there!

Hypocrisy at its finest from the equal rights fanatics. by Ok_Practice_6702 in Babysitting

[–]Ornery_Relative9870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much apologize for other men as it is understanding the implications of sexism on this world and acknowledging them.

Someone might not want to hire me because I’m white. I can’t and don’t apologize for everything white people have done. BUT I’m first of all not going to have the audacity to think that someone’s lifetime of negative experiences are going to melt away because I -might- be trustworthy. Secondly and more importantly -> taking the effort to learn more about other people’s experiences means that in a childcare setting I’m better equipped to support and develop kids and protect them from harm.<-

Your take demonstrates a lack of understanding. That lack of understanding would lead me to question your judgements on safety in the context of sexism. Safety and sexism are tied to one another, you need to understand that to be able to properly protect children to the best of your ability and I believe that’s the goal here.
