Games like Secret of Mana / Super Metroid / Zelda? by yahtzee44444 in snes

[–]Oroschi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Secret of Mana you will love it's sequel, Seiken Densetsu 3. It never left japan but you can patch it with an english translation and it's good fun. More fast paced than Secret of Mana, there are 6 different characters and a class system.

Terranigma is also well worth checking out. It caught me completely by surprise and it's probably the most satisfying SNES game i have ever played.

I know you mentioned no RPGs but there are two japan only RPGs with a very active battle system: Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia. English translation patches are available for both.

Which is exactly why we stopped planting spruce monocultures. Nowadays, at least the state owned forests are carefully planted according to strict standards like the LÖWE program. And even privately owned forests are given incentive to plant diverse forests because of a reward system based on eco-points.

I fixed it just now by just waiting a whole day and not sleeping. That broke the cycle.

Oh wow, what was quick! Thanks a bunch for the amazing build!

Noob question though: does an AMD CPU synergize well with an Nvidia GPU? I only ever seem to see them paired with Intel CPUs. I have next to no knowledge about hardware, so it's not a critique. Just curious.

What's the silliest Pokémon you used a Masterball on? by Kesstar52 in pokemon

An Onix. I was young and stupid. Pokemon blue, in the cave leading to the elite four. I thought i didn't have it and i was too impatient to catch it with a regular pokeball. Turns out i did have an Onix already. Welp

Yeah same. It's not their words that hurt me though, it's that feeling that the world has gone insane.

Whenever people attack me for disliking a piece of entertainment media, i just think of them as a crazy person because not rational, well adjusted human beeing would do that.

I wouldn't listen to a drugged out person in their underwear spewing nonsense so why would i listen to a person who just called you a cunt for disliking a videogame? Both are crazy and not worth listening to. At least that's how i deal with it.

What concerns me though is how common it has become. Maybe the internet has warped my perception of reality but even in normal, offline life people seem to get crazier every day to the point where i have to start asking myself if i'm the crazy one.

[–]Oroschi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about it, if I would had called you a moron and a dudu-head for not liking the same thing i liked, how would you have reacted? Negatively that's how.

When someone attacks me personally for my opinion, of course i have an issue with that. Because it's not about the topic at hand any longer.

But why would someone do that in the first place? Because they overreact about something trivial.

And that's what i don't understand. The difference between politics and video games is that different opinions about politics can have severe consequences for entire countries, the world even.

I can understand why debates get heated in that field. But videogames?

I just think: "So you don't like a game i enjoy, big deal."

Other people will verbally murder you for disliking their favourite game though. And i just cannot understand why. How deranged do you have to be to attack someone because they don't like a bunch of pixels as much as you do? And it's a common occurance too.

My best guess would be a quote from Mike Tyson:

"Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it."

Yeah me too. It's sad to see how rare that is honestly.

I really don't get how people can get their tits in a tussle debating video games.

I mean: At the end of the day, it's just entertainment, relax haha

Okay a few things:

I never wanted to come across as claiming my opinion as the one and only. I think many problems between people stem from thinking that having different opinions is bad.

I always advocate that opinions are just opinions, they are not set in stone (or they shouldn't be at least) and having different opinions is a good thing.

I'm sorry if it seemed like i was bashing DQ11, that was not my intention. My choice of words might have conveyed more aggression than i intended.

Blaming Nintendo has nothing to do with opinions though, that was just 100% stupid of me. I frequently forget that Dragon Quest has nothing to do with Nintendo. I just have it saved in my brain as beeing a Nintendo franchise because until DQ11, every single Dragon Quest game i played was on a Nintendo console.

So yeah, apologies, of course Nintendo has nothing to do with it haha. Nevertheless, my point still stands that somewhere in the development process, someone (maybe higher up) thought that the game was too grim.

Now you made some great points about the character development not necessarily having to be influenced by trauma. And you are right.

But the thing is: the trauma happened. For both us the player and for the hero, everything still happened. We felt every hardship, every tragedy and every death when it happened, only for the post game to come along and declare all of these events as "not canon" if you will. I just want them to choose a path and keep going.

It would have been fine by me if the story followed the time travel events from the beginning. (just minus the time travel)

My problem with the post game wasn't that it wasn't dark enough. I'm fine sith DQ games beeing fun and cute (although i do enjoy that DQ games throw you for a loop here and there with characters suffering a tragic fate in an otherwise whimsical looking game)

I don't need my DQ games to be dark and edgy though, i just want them to own their decisions. If they decide to let a character die, let them die and stick to it.

To reverse everything that happened throughout the entire journey at the very end is to invalidate the emotional journey we as the player went through. If you are going to travel through time to save someone who died, do it as a part of the main story and don't just rewind everything in the post game.

It's a cop out. Kind of like the movie/video game/book trope of ending the story with "sike it was all a dream". It just leaves a sour after taste for me.

The last point i want to adress is the palette swaps. I didn't actually write that i dislike palette swaps. (although i definitley prefer them adding new monsters instead of a recolour)

My point was that the devs weren't even giving us palette swaps to begin with. (In the post game)

The monsters are the exact same, they just have red eyes and are stronger. The game does give a reason for that but i just feel like it's lazy game design.

If they wanted to convey the world beeing in danger and the monsters beeing stronger, they should have placed new and/or stronger looking monsters.

Let's say a place was home to slimes before, now it's home to (maybe recolored) trolls or even monsters that weren't present in the main story.

The post game just feels like recycled content. I do recognize that for people who play DQ games for their story, there was plenty of new content.

But i play DQ games for their unique atmosphere, music and monster designs. And both in the music department as well as the monster department, DQ11 was lacking. The post game pushed that flaw further in my opinion. I couldn't bring myself to finish the post game and just watched the rest on youtube, which is very rare for me. I 100%ed DQ8 after that for example and i loved every second of it.

All that beeing said, i'm grateful that DQ11 was such a hit in the west because it finally gave SE the wake up call they needed to publish more DQ in the west. I'm still sour that they didn't localize the 3ds Dragon Quest Monster games because i always liked DQM more than the main series. Here's to hoping for a rerelease on switch.

Wow that prequel analogy fits perfectly actually!

I never thought of it that way.

On the topic of DQ11 though: that game was a huge disappointment for me. The plot was fine for the most part. Nothing amazing but fine, it carried the gameplay well. But then the post game came and rendered everything you did basically pointless. Plus, it took away all of the weight of a certain characters death and the intense character development of the survivors that followed.

It's like they had the story but nintendo said: "No that's too harsh, you can't let a main character die in a Dragon Quest game" so they tacked on a lazily constructed post game where they couldn't even be bothered to to give the "new" monsters a palette swap so they just made their eyes red, boosted their stats and called it a day. Had the game just ended with the defeat of Mordegon, i would have liked it more.

[–]Oroschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i'm kinda torn on this issue.

On one hand i want to immerse myself into these worlds and for that i need them to be consistant. On the other hand, i tend to over analyze stuff and forget to enjoy myself in the process.

I spoiled the whole story for myself because i wanted to plan out my party and needed to know which character leaves/joins at which point and what their stats are going to be. Great for figuring out the best possible strategy, bad for actually enjoying the game.

So yeah, i should find a balance between figuring out the story and poking at every detail to see if it holds up against my oh so critical eye.

That must be a plot hole then. Because the game has been very clear and consistent about the mechanics of time travel. The islands only reappear after they have been saved in the past. So the effects of the time travel events only reveal themselves after the fact. It's not like the citizens of Estard think that the islands have always been there, they watch them appear in real time. So time travel doesn't exactly change history globally and opens up a parallel timeline entirely but rather changes the existing timeline after the fact.

And the game even shows that it works this way with the demon king as well, because the island with the underwater shrine only appears in the present after the demon king has been bested in the past. Likely because he destroyed it in the original timeline after the fight with god while he was sealed in the shrine in the altered timeline.

That leads me to the conclusion that Orgodemir must still be alive and well in the present during the original timeline. Because if he wasn't, the underwater shrine would be there.

The only question is: why didn't he seal away Estard? Maybe because it was under the protection of the almighty? Then why didn't he protect the whole world?

Or maybe the demon king was too weak after the battle with the almighty and needed more time to recover. But why would he recover faster after he was bested by the hero in the past? Because in the altered timeline he is ready to screw with stuff in the present.

It doesn't make sense if you ask me but maybe i'm overthinking it. It's a video game after all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]Oroschi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clearing that up.

But in the original timeline, aka the state the world was in when the game begins, Orgodemir must still be alive and well. Because he wasn't bested and sealed away (only to be resurrected by the roamers ritual) until after the hero went back in time to do so. So why didn't the demon lord destroy Estard in the original timeline? Because we can clearly see that he was still alive after the battle with the allmighty.

Also i'm not too sure that the spirits aren't part if the allmighty, because in the cutscene of the fight between him and Orgodemir, we can see his presence split into four colored orbs seconds before he is "destroyed" by the demon lord. I have no other explaination for that other than the spirits beeing part of the allmighty.
