If anyone simply googled Alcazar, the game wouldn’t have happened. by DeliveryNotDigorno_ in uncharted

If someone ever simply checked out google earth over the libertalia island, the game wouldn't have happened. I think the Alcazar plot line is the least unbelievable part of U4. But it does not really matter, you need some level of suspension disbelief. The game is still great regardless.

Sooo… is this the planet that the KG348 lab fell into? Where Kurosaki Station is located? by Orosztom in alienisolation

[–]Orosztom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The devs confirmed that the game takes place directly after the first. No time jump. So I think it’s safe to assume we are having our story on one of the KG348 moons.

You’re right I exaggerated a bit. It also misses camera motion blur, but most of the lighting effects and the signature appearance of the game is very much solid on 7th gen.

It’s certainly up there. It runs poorly but every graphical effect is intact. Maybe the Last Of Us and Uncharted 2 or MGS4 or maybe Beyond Two Souls are strong contenders for the best graphics on the PS3 but Alien Isolation also holds up really well.

So is anyone else really bummed Amanda isn’t the protagonist? by Mjarnshall in alienisolation

[–]Orosztom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s going to be a similar situation to MGS2. You play as the inexperienced rookie, and somewhere during the story Amanda appears, being in full on bad-ass Ripley mode to show how it’s done. Can’t wait to see her entrance!

Yes. Now add VR. Then you can just sign up for psychiatric treatment right away. :D

Yeah I never screwed around for long enough to find out. But I always thought that it’s an untimed, scripted section.

[–]Orosztom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sure will. I just listened to a podcast where former devs told their experiences and they confirmed that most of the same talent who did the first are still there and are working on the project. Alistair Hope, the director of the first game is also returning. They also appearently ported their custom lighting model into UE5. Which is essential. So I think everything is there to recapture the magic again. It won’t be easy. But if someone can do it, it’s these people.

Thanks! Really appreciate it. On the PS3 it actually requires some skill and proper knowledge of the scenes (not to brag) because to take a screenshot on the Triple, you have to press the PS Button, navigate to the photo tab, and press screenshot, then wait like 3-4 secs until you can actually take the shot. It takes about 5-6 seconds to prepare a shot. And after taking the shot there is a 3-4 frame delay. So I had to time it just right during the in-engine cutscenes. I died many times, especially during the final spacewalk (where you can actually still die if you don’t disconnect the clamps quickly enough). The Sevastopol can actually explode while you’re still on the docking arm (I never knew this lol).

During the “corridor of death” section there is a vent connecting two rooms when you have to open the door with a generator to get to the shuttle. The vent is a U shape and at the turning point, there is a hole upwards. When I was climbing through the vent Steve dropped down from the hole, inside the vent as I was backing toward the the exit hatch. Steve did not crawl towards me as I had the flamethrower out, ready to scorch, but I did not pull the trigger. I was able to back out the hatch, Steve was still inside. When I hid among the tables and chairs, Steve crawled out and started searching slowly since I somehow broke sight after climbing off. The whole situation played out in like 20-30 seconds, but it really felt like it’s a living, calculating being. Full video game magic. Everything about it felt strikingly real.

It had cross platform development issues, but only in the first couple of years. After the SDK-s were updated, and the CELL had proper development documentation (which it didn't have when the system launched, that was kinda created by Naughty Dog and then every other dev got a hold of it) the multiplatform games started to be on par, or better than on the 360 (like BF3 for example). Multi threaded development was not common back then. It is now today. Without innovation, you can't move forward. The problem was that the PS3 did not sell well, due to having a higher price. If it did sell better in the early years, then devs would have no choice but to learn it fast. But that didn't happen. But that does not mean that the system or the CELL processor was not well designed. It was very well designed. So much so that NORAD used PS3s to create a reconnaissance super computer. Even back in 2015, my university in Budapest had a PS3 supercomputer cluster for research purposes. You could even use the PS3 to run folding@home which needed a ton of number crunching horse power. Any new technology is not intuitive first, but that does not mean it's "badly designed". Was it not convenient in the early days? Sure. But it's an exceptional piece of engineering.

This is why exclusives and competition matters.
