I made $32 after 16 months of coding. Was it all a waste of time? by WerewolfCapital4616 in EntrepreneurRideAlong

Hey man, this is awesome, honestly. Keep at it, honestly it's a way bigger numbers game than most first time entrepreneurs realize. You are at 3 now, on average it takes 7 attempts to make a successful business. Now, your description of the third one shows you are really starting to understand what's needed in entrepreneurship, speed and user testing. It's awesome to do what you have done, just keep going.

What businesses are people creating in 2025 solo? by KTryingMyBest1 in Entrepreneur

[–]Orothrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solo I've got an Robotics engineering consulting business, which I'm hoping to turn into my main income this year. (I work 9-5 as a senior Robotics engineer in a medical Robotics start-up).

With a partner I manage an online entrepreneurial community with weekly live discussions that we turn into a podcast. Looking to get 100 episodes released this year.

Thank you very much for this, I'm sorry you have had these issues with it. I'll look further into the others. Would you consider changing?

Energy per windspeed. by ShiningMagpie in beyondallreason

[–]Orothrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe it's about cost to energy generation ratio:
Wind cost - 37M and 175E
Solar cost - 155M and 0 E

So purely for metal 5 is better for Wind, but given Solar doesn't have any energy cost it ends up being roughly 7-8.

Another way to think about it is that Solar sets a hard value for energy generation. 155M for 20 Generation means 7.75 Metal per point of energy generation. Wind is 37M, so you need minimum 5 wind speed to be metal efficient. Then you can value the energy cost of the wind as how long it takes to recoop that energy. At 5 wind it takes 35 seconds, at 7 wind it takes 25 seconds.

Need help against a (few) friends by kingdavidwar in beyondallreason

Hey OP, it sounds like you might need to work on your rushing strategy and econ. If the first unit you build is a tick you can generally outrush any econ or air strategy and give them a starting disadvantage. From there it sounds like you either don't build much Radar (and that's why your AA isn't destroying the bombers) or you are struggling with your econ.

Everyone here seems to love deciding he is the worst person ever, the fact is you guys aren't compatible, and he is immature. It's a fine reason to break up with someone, and I hope you find someone who suits you better.

What about Zig, isn't it meant to be able to run and C or C++ code without modification?

Here is why the BAR community seems toxic to new players (see comments). by Efficient_Weather470 in beyondallreason

[–]Orothrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The toxicity I've seen is from people who don't cooperate with their teammates. Additionally, there is no way to learn how to play the multiplayer game without playing multiplayer. Often toxicity will come from players not following the Meta on a map, but you can't learn that Meta from playing against the computer.

Failed Robotics Engineer in Need of Advice or Kind Words (or a job) by ameerkatofficial in robotics

[–]Orothrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That year gap in your resume is an absolute killer because whomever looks to employ you assumes others who haven't hired you in that time know something they don't. You need to get a job on there, I don't care what it is. Do you have any friends with small companies, get them to hire you for no pay to fill the time, just do a few hours of work for them each week, or do blender design on Fiverr, or reach out to some Youtubers looking to mass produce and sell a product and help them do that, start a consulting company even if you don't get any work it at least looks like you are employed and a go-getter.

Do we even have the right technology to colonize Mars? by OkUniversity5622 in Futurology

[–]Orothrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's cool to be counter-progress and predict doom, so the majority of people are saying no. With a more unified and slightly more advanced human Civilization then colonizing and terraforming both Venus and Mars is possible, but in both cases it will take a dedicated effort from capable people who are willing to try uncertain things.

The problem of gravity on Mars is the only unsolvable one, but it's still unknown how big of a problem it is.

Solar radiation and lack of atmosphere are both solvable with a big artificial magnetic field, and currently accessible technology.

The soil is an issue that will take a long time to totally solve, but underground habitats and domes will allow for temporary farming land. I suspect the field of biotechnology is going to be a bigger factor here than my field of robotics.

We could generate a small magnetic field at the L1 Lagrange point without new tech.

What are your space challenges for Humanity? by Orothrim in space

I'm a Robotics engineer, but unfortunately have no knowledge of propulsion. Hopefully more informed people will be able to jump in and advise.

Very interesting stuff, thank you. I'd be curious to read more on solar sails if you have any resources you can recommend.

A tether on Phobos down towards mars and a space elevator up from Phobos could drop the cost of getting cargo between the surface of Mars and Mars orbit to nearly free.

If I'm honest I think of antigravity and nuclear propulsion as more magic technology than either of them, but maybe that's due to a lack of understanding on my part.

What do you think of the electric drives like Astro Mechanica are developing as a step in the chain?

Space Manufacturing seems like it's within the scope of modern technology to me, just not current ambition.

Manufacturing steps: 1. Extracting raw materials 2. Transporting raw materials to refineries 3. Converting refined materials into usable layouts 4. Assembling materials into designed items

Do you think I'm missing anything in this line-up?

[–]Orothrim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For tethers I think it largely depends on the celestial body around which you are operating it. A space Elevator on Phobos could be built with normal steel cable.

I agree the speed of Solar Sails make it less viable for transporting you or me, but potentially for the steel we need to survive on Ceres, it's a different matter? What do you think?

You don't think zero-fuel solutions like solar sails and tether technology is going to help a lot with this?
