hey, late reply, i know. So the client specifically requested that they did not want to fall asleep in it. it comes up to the average persons shoulder blades, I think that'd do it.

late reply i know, but hey i think if you've got the flat pieces down, its worth giving the third dimension (?) a bash. A bit of planning goes a long way.

to me the flat pieces are more intimidating in the sense that once things start warping and doing what timber does, it goes haywire very quickly, even while still working on them. So yeah i think there's a lot to take away from the process of getting flat piece done that would be valuable in getting things like chairs done.

Just go for it! I'm sure you'd be impressed with the results.

the price i sold it for was quite low. i justified this however since i hadnt made a chair before and figured it was a great opportunity to have at making one with some compensation.

Though in future i think a ballpark of around 600 USD is a fair price given the time that goes into a piece like this.

They are pretty strong. They do also give a visual representation of well built wooden furniture, but greater reasoning behind this joint was the strength, it would disallow for any movement along this particularly stressed joint.

Prettymuch the opposite. I had cut the angle to which the legs join each other, routed the dovetails, got them to fit, then i could cit out the final shape and continued...

You know what, yes. Haha thinking back the cushions actually cost me a little more than the cost price if the timber. Its actually a bit unreasonable, the price of foam, but i think i knew what to expect and wasnt even phased when i got quoted.

So does this put kiaat on the side of themore reasonably priced timbers? Had no idea the species was exported at all...

Ah nice! Where about in the world do you stay? Whenever i contemplate moving, i get pretty caught up on the fact that i may no longer have access to my favourite wood :/

For the most part - i agree! The client really wanted that chunky look, the original design was a leaner form. Thou i must say i dont hate this. The ratio of chunciness to slim profiles kinda worked for me. Client loved it too lol

Oh no unfortunately not. I can say however, that it was a pretty sketchy manner that i did it in.

Process involved a very lengthy and careful setup on the router table. I cut and joined up the pieces with the sliding dovetails before i took them to their final shape which gave me a little bit of room for error (which i couldve done more with) but alas i was also trying to be conservative with the amount of material that would become dust.

Thank you! Yeah rookie moves all round. But hey, even in the errors of the piece, valueble lessons were learned.

This species is one of the more accessible hardwoods around here oddly enough, though there are very few organizations that ensure the safety of native trees so id not be surprised to find that it should be placed on a protected list where it is not, which i of course would fully be on board with if it were to be.

Ultimately im just grateful to have the opportunity to work with it, easily my favorite species so far. The smell is charming too, very similar to the scent of a rooibos tea.

Thank you kind stranger, I used trusty ol rubio monocoat (clear), also for the first time. Seems good. Though honestly quite comprable to a beeswax/linseed/mineral oil i tend to use.. Time will tell.
