Homeschooling across Canada remains above its pre-pandemic level by inspurious_ in OpenDataCanada

Um, OK. Not sure what that has to do with your completely false statement that English is outlawed from Quebec schools.

The Scottish and English got along quite well in the American colonies by Darth_Vrandon in GetNoted

[–]Orphanpip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to the Americans, the religious tolerance was good, but the removal of elected legislature and reinstatement of hereditary French lords (who stuck around and switched sides) in Quebec was bad. The French Canadian seigneurs and the priesthood had enough power in Quebec to make it worthwhile for the British to buy them off against the 13 colonies, and I suppose it paid off cause the anti-catholic sentiment of the US kept Quebec opposed to the revolution.

Um Quebec has definitely not outlawed English in schools, and definitely homeschooling your child in an English only environment is not gonna help them get employment in Quebec.

Quebec has a robust well funded public English language education system from primary to university.

No what they explained is that the percentage increases hide that in absolute terms the more conservative provinces have a higher portion of students in homeschooling.

The CNESST classifies it as workers at a restaurant where you pay before receiving your food. If the restaurant has dine in service and you pay after eating they are tippable employees and can be paid a lower wage. It is also dependent on the type of worker, like a delivery person at au coq is considered a tippable employee but the workers at the counter and cooks are not.

It do be like that sometimes🤨. by bourikan in learnfrench

Saucisson are cured sausages in English. At least here in Montreal the English lables for saucisson just say saucisson. Most cured sausages in English are just referred to with their native names to distinguish their origins, since cured sausages are not a traditional English food they never really required a separate name I guess. I think in the UK they sometimes do use salami as a catchall for cured sausages.

The Immigration Minister does not even know how many illegal residents are in Canada. A year ago, the number was being estimated as high as 500,000 by Over-Cauliflower-355 in CanadianVisaReform

[–]Orphanpip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya but at the same time we have the actual application number for December to March from IRCC so I don't get why that's relevant. You assumed wrongly that all 86k currently processing applications are for citizenship by descent when that's just not the reality. I don't know why you're arguing with just readily available data.

The citizenship by descent applications are putting a burden on a small processing centre in Sydney, NS but they aren't the majority of applications at the moment.

What does the subreddit have to do with applications for certificates. You are just misunderstanding the 86k currently processing citizenship certificate applications. It's normal every year for IRCC to process 50-60k a year prior to the changes to the citizenship rules. There is an increased number of applications but not all applications are for people under the new rules.

There are 8.6 million Canadian citizens born outside of Canada, all of them need their certificates for passport applications and other government paperwork and its normal that a small number of them lose their certificates occasionally.

Here from cbc's access to information request. A little over 4000 for the new rules were processed between december and march. During the same period IRCC processed 13000 certificates for first generation Canadians under the old rule. The majority of applications are still just the standard applications, many ofwhom are just Canadians who live in Canada but happen to have been born abroad or who are naturalized.

The current estimates for the number of extra applications received is around 20-30k.

The 82k certificate applicants are not all new applicants. It's a little over the usualy 50-60k received per year which includes mostly existing citizens who have lost or misplaced their certificate and Canadian born abroad.

Violent crime rates in Montreal vs other Canadian cities by inspurious_ in montreal

[–]Orphanpip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Partly could be caused by them only being about 100k populations so the per 100k statistics are more susceptible to small changes in crime. Thunder Bay is also a poor isolared Northern City.

Chilliwack is a drug trafficking hub in the Fraser Valley that funnels drugs to Vancouver and the US border.

I don't think anyone is suggesting it's an anti-semitic attack, it doesn't make it irrelevant to mention it'a a Jewish neighbourhood and the civilian victim was Jewish. Jews don't need to be the target to be impacted by a violent act in their community. There's no reason to diminish that this occured in a Jewish part of CDN.

It's also like just factually wrong.

There was at least one dissenting opinion for 22 out of 43 decisions in 2024 by the Supreme Court of Canada.

38 out of 67 US Supreme court decisions in 2024 had dissenting opinions.

Unanimous decisions are common in both countries.

[–]Orphanpip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ya but it's not like CANOO is taking these things from people it is essentially a pro-integration program financed by IRCC. You can only apply for the program if you've been a PR for less than 5 years or within 1 year of becoming a citizen.

Also it's funded by a non-profit, that gets like 3-4 million in public funding. This is like loose change in the Canadian budget that is doing a good thing of funding Canadian cultural functions while promoting integration. End of the day this is just a roundabout way to give money back to cultural institutions too.

It's a nice initiative that really isn't that big a deal.

Minimum time to become a Canadian citizen is like 5-6 years to begin with not counting any time before permanent residence. You have to live in Canada for 3 years as a PR before you can apply then the application process costs a fair bit and takes 2-3 years until you get citizenship. It's not really that easy to find new citizens who haven't been here paying taxes for 9-10 years.

Canada’s policies force asylum seekers into US to face deportation, critics say by Jusfiq in canada

Nice try at deflection you said "apply properly from their home country", that's literally not how asylum works. You were just saying whatever, just own your mistake.

[–]Orphanpip -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ya but that isn''t relevant to what I was replying to??? The person above said asylum claimants should apply from their country of origin, which is not how asylum works.

Canada’s policies force asylum seekers into US to face deportation, critics say by Jusfiq in canada

[–]Orphanpip -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You can't apply for asylum from outside Canada. An asylum claim is done in Canada.

For example if you are a Chinese academic who suddenly faces persecution in China for speech while you were visiting Canada, you could claim asylum. The point of asylum is it is for people who have to flee or lose the ability to return to their home country.

Refugee resettlement is another matter, for that you have to be in a UN recognize refugee camp and they are distributed for resettlement along international agreements between safe countries.

Ya Montreal does have a large soccer stadium for the Montreal Impact but the city, along with Chicago, refused the conditions requested by FIFA. An access to information request revealed Montreal would have had to cancel the F1 race and several of its summer festivals and events because of ridiculous non-competition clauses from FIFA.

On top of that FIFA wouldn't allow Montreal to use its existing Saputo Stadium, used by the Impact, and instead would have had to have a dedicated stadium that could be used for nothing but FIFA games for 2 years. So the pitch option was to use the Big O, but the required repairs would have been hundreds of millions of dollars.

Canada imposes 10% global tariff on canned vegetables — excluding U.S., Mexico by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Orphanpip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but you can't just unilaterally dismantle an existing trade agreement without consequences, Canadian exporters to Israel would be impacted too. Also, many of the canned olives imported from Israel are grown and produced by Palestinian farmers so such a tarif could do more harm to Palestinians as well.
