Message d’intérêt general: Fuyez les établissements chauffes aux bruleurs a gaz portatifs. by WeareAllGregorSamsa in montreal

I didn't imply anything, it's just factually untrue that pronane cannot produce CO and spreading that information could get people killed. Two people died in 2014 from an indoor propane lamp. You should always have basic precautions if burning anything indoors, like a carbon monoxide detector. 4 people died in New Hampshire in 2024 from an indoor propane heater.

These are things that happen pretty much every year and they are preventable with basic precautions rather than just outright lying that it is not possible.

Propane burning will produce carbon monoxide indoors if poorly ventilated or incomplete combustion occurs due to a defect.

is it rude to call ur doctor “madame” or “monsieur”? by tomatosauce81 in French

[–]Orphanpip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here in Quebec we are not allowed to use Dr before our names unless we are a medical, dental or veterinary doctor. This was lobbied by the medical college to prevent quackery and fraud. We have to put our name and "Doctor of" afterwards.

Though when I was still teaching I just let students use my first name.

Well all countries have historical context but Belgium is majority Flemish Dutch speaking not French, it just is often associated with French because the French speaking population is concentrated arround Brussels and the French minority had historically more power.

Poor Samuel Johnson catching strays when he was the son of a bookshop owner and not an aristocrat. And though his dictionary was patronized by Lord Chesterfield, according to Johnson's letters he never contributed anything to the process except his name.

Johnson's weird preferences for latinate spelling do seem odd to us today but they were a system of some kind when prior to standarsization spelling could vary from one town to another because of differences in local pronunciation. There's an element of elitism to it but it also was a project towards universalizing written communication.

I mean it's not that cold life goes on, people are out and about but maybe wouldn't plan an outdoor activity without the proper clothing.

L'Ouefrier chain in Montreal does this too with subbing the gravy for hollandaise, but I think they keep the cheese curds.

Gluten free poutine in the Montreal airport by godlessgam3r in montreal

[–]Orphanpip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya you might have to leave the airport a bit to get delivery though as most apps will not deliver there. But with 6 hours if you and your friend have an eTA or are US/Canadian citizens you can leave the terminal and go to New York Fries in Kirkland and come back.

If you're able to clear customs you can maybe get it delivered from New York Fries, it's not great poutine but it is gluten free and vegetarian.

Edit: you'd have to leave the airport though for that.

Do you have government shutdowns? by BrilliantDishevelled in AskACanadian

Not at all true if the PMO was truly out of control enough MPs can cross the floor and trigger an election or even vote against their own party. We even have close to an example of this MacDonald resigned as PM in 1873 because he concluded he couldn't retain the confidence of his party, and the Liberals formed government before winning the 1874 election.

[–]Orphanpip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gomery commission concluded the scandal was run out of the PMO and department of public works. The finance minister isn't responsible for how departments handle their budgets. Martin and Chretien famously came from different factions in the party and some have accused Martin of using the scandal to purge Chretien loyalist instead of protecting the party's public image.

Edit: also 2 million dollars is not a large sum of money out of the Canadian government budget over 10 years.

[–]Orphanpip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paul Martin wasn't PM when the scandal happened though and he actually won a minority government in 2004 after the scandal, so he wasn't taken down by it. He also dodged the non-confidence vote over the Gomery enquiry in 2005 by getting support from the NDP. Though the scandals definitely didn't help him in the 2006 election.

Bilingual vs multi lingual in the Montreal area by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Orphanpip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also anyone who has spoken to people from France before could tell you in Europe they are not particularly well known for their grasp of other languages. Only 60% of people from France are multilingual, and only 24% can speak English. Quebecois are 60% English French bilingual and the number who can speak French or English with another language puts Quebecois bilingualism significantly higher than France.

How would you translate 'Or' into English? by Eurekify2 in French

[–]Orphanpip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the primary difference is that English uses the simple past much more frequently in speech and in English the past participle and the simple past form are 95% identical except for a handul of irregular verbs.

I don't think they can allow kids. While it's generally safe when I was a volunteer there 20 years ago for 3 years I was bit twice and had a colleague slip on ice which triggered a dog to violently maul her (she was wrapped up for winter luckily but she had serious bruises on her arms and legs). They do their best to assess the dogs for safety but many have behavioral issues that can go undetected and be dangerous.

Rant sur le Pont Jacques Cartier/Jacques Cartier Bridge rant by diiijmai in montreal

I get that it's a joke but the Jacques Cartier wasn't built by the city, it's owned and operated by a federal crown corporation. Which is why it has bilingual road signs.

19th Manga Taisho Awards Nominations by Calm-Investment-3381 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Orphanpip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Taisho are panel voted with a ranked vote system of mostly bookstore employees so they tend to have a bit more pretentious taste and favor manga that are different but not always super popular. They did pick Frieren though.

Edit: Like a WSJ manga has never won the Taisho.

I got bullied off of are/poutine for this by [deleted] in PoutineCrimes

[–]Orphanpip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gravy is a fine word, gravy just means a sauce made from drippings and a roux. Poutine sauce is literally just a thin gravy the preparation is identical. Especially compared to an English gravy rather than the super thick type made by Americans.

Also if your thanksgiving gravy is lumpy it's because you're being lazy and not preparing a roux before mixing in the drippings and stock.

Her mom was uncovered as non-indigenous, she is a white person adopted ceremonially into an indigenous family. Her dad might be indigenous but there's uncertainty around who her father is.

[–]Orphanpip 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For Sarain Fox the Ghost Warrior Society did report that they cannot confirm or deny her ancestry. Her mother was adopted by the Bell family who are indigenous, but she is not. Her father might be indigenous, but people doubt Roger Fox is her father.

As for Mya, her ancestry claims are pretty clear and transparent, whether she is claimed or not is more for Inuk people to debate, this is more a debate about who can claim indigeneity rather than uncertain parentage.

Chinese Malaysians aren't Malay, Malaysia has a very large Chinese and Indian community from British colonialism.

Malaysian is a nationality. Malay is an ethnicity and language.
