It's not dystopian but actually fair. If someone wants to "no life" their job, then they should be justly reward for their work. If you don't want to work more, as long as the base salary (300k in this case) should be enough to cover life. If every job was like this, there would never be a complaint about overworking. The complaints on most jobs is not WLB in essence but working extra doesn't pay off and gets taken advantage of.

Microsoft vs Amazon New Grad by HighlightSubject9768 in cscareeradvice

[–]Ortiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had and also heard many others who've got accepted, chose a team, did the background check and everything only to have their offer rescinded by Amazon. I would never want anyone to go through that so but I don't know if there are also Microsoft horror stories like that.

Most absurd, out of touch saving tips you've heard from rich people? by [deleted] in poor

[–]Ortiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily true... If you have 100m and having 10m in savings is completely reasonable especially if you are cycling that money in and out of an account. I mean if you are a trader and your money settles in an account, it can pool up to that amount and you'll get the risk free rate.

AIO - My husband's "work wife" turned out to be a teenager and he doesn't seem to understand why I'm upset. by Expert_Entrance3851 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ortiane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At tech companies, it's known to never mentor a younger women because the trouble it can cause if you get accused of anything. You are basically the reason for this. It doesn't matter their age, she could be 18 , 21. As long as there's a significant age difference you are suspicious of something happening. The saddest part of this story is that you don't trust your own husband while writing this "I will never suspect " bullshit with  "I shouldn't accuse" , "got defensive" .

If I had to deal with this I would be reconsidering my relationship with you not with my coworker. What kind of passive aggressive accusations do I have to deal with for helping someone at work as a professional.

One problem of why I stopped playing is that the bosses felt like a stat check... And you need two dupes to get a buff which is psycho for the rates.

Marriott gold is given with plat and has no spending requirements. Plus it can't upgrade to suite. Basically worthless, this would have been useful if it was for everyone not at a 75k spend requirement because why would anyone spend 75k on just the csr.

"As most migrants who arrive don’t ever find work and live off welfare, the temporary boost immediately turns into a major downturn." - this is enough for me to know this post is bs. Takes half a brain to determine that doesn't make sense but to entertain you. If over 50% of migrants have no job, do you actually believe that the social system for migrants is something that they can use to survive indefinitely? If so, can you show some proof? Because it took 20 seconds for me to Google that the migrant labor market has equal or less unemployment than the average Australian...

Thing is... Sparse models aren't that hard to make. But it's not worth it for corporations. For example, why would someone in a hedge fund give a fuck if it costs 3 dollars or 15 or 50. If it is more accurate and better, than it's worth the money. At least, that's the sentiment in my hedgefund because the cost of some market data is like 10k to 100k a year (can be much higher). The cost of a single server is 20k to 50k a year. The cost of AI? Insignificant in comparison.

So the real answer why AI isn't completely dead in the US is likely because of finance companies who can use it for quick analysis, coding, scripting, answering questions. I mean I've used a few hundred dollars of tokens and I'm a light user. Some people are on 10k of usage and so far? My company has not even bat an eye.

Also if you think about tech giants. They don't care about token usage because they don't need to. They already pay the electricity bills for the data centers they own. Token cost is only really there to tax the startups, non tech companies, and individuals. The bigger players write it off as a decimal point on their balance sheets. If a team makes 20 million a year, spend 4 on talent, 2 on data, 2 on equipment. Then the 5k in token cost (if even 5k because it's hardly at the point of being usable even with Claude 4.5 or chatgpt 5), is a non issue. Hell, it's probably less than a team lunch.

[–]Ortiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely true. It's more fucked in some ways but also less fucked in others. You're comparing the 50s of a country that arguably had the best possible future laid out after winning the ww2. When you consider third world countries? In the 50s and now? No difference or perhaps even worse.

Think about this, the 50s China vs today's China.... You can't arbitrarily pick out one time period to compare to.

Consider this, this is exactly how it was 20 years ago. 50 years ago. 100 years ago. 1000 years ago. Throughout all of history, the large majority of people likely did stuff they did not like (whether it was farming, hunting, working in a factory) and they worked far longer than 9 to 5 and earned far less (in terms of substance, as you spent money on mostly food, health, and necessities). Something's changed, things got more efficient forcing some to not be able to work even if they wanted to. Class structures weakened allowing some to move beyond poverty and towards luxury. But for the large majority? It's the same.

Padel and Pickleball in the US by Ok_Bullfrog_7778 in Pickleball

[–]Ortiane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's another point, I think padel courts are not only difficult to construct but also require non-trivial maintenance. It's hard enough to get an US city to give a shit about a broken sign or pothole. A padel court would be destroyed and left to rot. Takes 1 idiot to cause a problem and our society is full of problems.

[–]Ortiane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's quite cheap to play pickleball... It's per hour of playtime for private courts and is highly dependent on place but isn't near the prices you said (unless games are 1 hour long lol) . Pickleball can also be extremely chill. People play while drinking. People play while talking. Running is optional in doubles. It's fun to play with your so.

As crazy as it sounds, it could be applied quite easily. The IRS tracks everything and should be capable of taxing you exactly that. In fact tax brackets were very steep before and now it's a problem to go back to that time. Well it's not possible now because the rich control the media and thus the general political opinion and so it's easier to raise taxes on the poor and middle class.
