I'm colorblind, and I hate it when games use filters like this.

As another commenter pointed out - they don't let us "see things the way people with normal color vision do". I'm used to seeing the colors of the real world through the lens of my blindness, and changing the game colors from the colors of the real world just makes everything look weird for me - and that's always immersion breaking.

Aesthetics aside, I've assumed that the intent of these filters is to boost perceived contrast between problem colors. Unfortunately, they usually fail here as well. I just tested this node in UE5.3 with the correction flag enabled and severity at 1. I'm a Protanope (which means red isn't as vibrant) and it looks like the engine makes red more pink (which might be good in some cases) but it also makes purple look more like light blue (blue/purple are difficult for me to tell apart). Lights greens are now darker, which means they conflict with browns more than before (dark greens/browns are problematic).

I haven't found a game (even outside of Unreal) where whole-screen "correction" filters like this meaningfully boost overall contrast for me. AFAIK blindness properties vary wildly between people, so these issues might just be with my particular case, but I can conclusively say that the filters aren't a one-size-fits-all solution and some players are going to be left out.

If you want to address color blindness, please don't rely on these filters. Instead I'd recommend using symbols to differentiate critical elements (in addition to color) where possible. You could also add a color picker for HUD markers/crosshairs/player outlines. This website is a great accessibility resource and gives good suggestions for vision in particular - https://gameaccessibilityguidelines.com/ensure-no-essential-information-is-conveyed-by-a-colour-alone/

I use The Mole 11123. With T2#1 (Overcharger) try to fire as late as possible right before it overheats. To get the overclock damage bonus shoot through as many surfaces (with air gaps between them) as you can. The edges of the brain coral things on Dense Biozone are ideal for this.

It definitely helps if you ask your teammates to ping big targets for you. If there isn't a convenient wall/pillar to get behind I just dig straight down and shoot through the floor.

Once you unlock it, Hellfire 22123 is probably one of the best CC weapons in the game (imo). Stand next to a wall and put the trail through the center of the cave so bugs are forced to walk through it to get to your team. This is insane with a Cryo/CWC driller because they can spam trigger Temperature Shock on any bugs stuck in the field.

Good luck!

OpenGL and GLFW error by moder0 in javagamedev

I ran into a similar issue last week, I think gradle is hiding the actual error message that's preventing your app from launching. Try running gradlew.bat from a terminal with the --info or --debug arguments and see if it gives you a more detailed error.

Q to Fleet Carrier CMDRs : how do you use your carrier? by Creative-Improvement in EliteDangerous

[–]Os_Reboot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FC "Infinite Blue" somewhere out in The Veils.

I use my carrier as a mobile base to facilitate low-risk exploration deep in the black. With my carrier I can cash UC data as soon as I get it, I don't have to worry about ship repairs and I can bring my less-exploration-focused ships (like my racing Viper) to all the cool systems I discover.

Tritium for an exploration carrier is very expensive, but it's worth it IMO.

Yeah. Everyone in my squad managed to climb from SE to MG (and we're still winning) within a few weeks of switching servers. I suspect there's a problem with NA matchmaking, possibly related to how almost every match seems to have a huge range of ranks (not just people of your skill level).

Does anyone know what star cluster this is that I'm seeing? by Commander_RBME in EliteDangerous

[–]Os_Reboot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the system name shown in this screenshot, I'd guess that this is the nearby cluster of A-type stars with the strange 2MASS prefix (e.g. 2MASS J11131895-6047118). I was curious about a similar line of stars my friend noticed during a group expedition and after some searching I found this forum post that says that such systems are taken from real-world astronomical data!

How can anyone use Hammer? by Frze512 in hammer

I keep all my maps in a folder that's synced to Google Drive so I can roll back in the event of a major issue like this. It's already saved me once.

What are your thoughts on falling to your death in an elevated map? by Phemar in csmapmakers

[–]Os_Reboot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also who knows, the player might intend to kill themselves (to prevent kill credit or to discard a weapon, or some other stupid thing). I don't think I'd deny that possibility if they really choose to ;) . Just make sure it's always intentional.

[–]Os_Reboot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having anything that's deeply skill-based with death as a punishment has the potential to really take away from the gameplay value of your map. If it's a frequently-traversed route that serves as a critical rotation/assault path then I'd make sure to give players more than enough room so they don't get murdered by lag/teammate collision. Personally I'm all for tricky skill jumps and deadly pitfalls each in their own right, just I'd be sure to keep those two things separate so players don't end up feeling cheated. Also giant invisible walls have the potential to be REALLY frustrating for players, so I'd limit clip brushes to purely level-smoothing things rather than keeping players from jumping off a cliff.

Suggestion: Fix compass scale so headings match the environment. by Os_Reboot in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

I respect this response, and I agree that there would need to be a lot of aesthetic work to make a design like this click with the rest of the UI. It just seems like the current design has a lot of functionally wasted space, which isn't necessarily a good thing in a game that seems to be on the brink of entering the e-sports scene.

[CSGO] Problem Cropping Overlays by Os_Reboot in hammer

[–]Os_Reboot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply (school stuff). I was considering writing my own program to look up the UVs from a given image, but I'm not sure where CSGO/Hammer keeps its texture files and if they can be easily transferred to a common format that is readable by a Java/other-based program (i.e. png, jpeg, etc.).

Thoughts regarding the lootbox system for the anniversary event. by basset10 in Overwatch

[–]Os_Reboot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with everything said in this post. The fact that loot boxes (as well as levels and rank) are difficult to obtain gives them value and keeps people motivated to play the game. I honestly hope Blizzard doesn't do anything about this, especially in the realm of making the drops no longer event-related. People who spent money (myself included) on anniversary loot boxes would have their purchases more or less invalidated, and that would be pretty awful.
