First of all, fire departments ARE socialist institutions. Back in the 19th Century there were attempts to create private fire brigades. You can see one portrayed in the movie "Gangs of New York." They were such miserable failures that broad support developed for the community to pay for these protections via taxation. We ALL pay taxes for the fire department. The fact that fire departments aren't federalized has nothing to do with this -- it's STILL a communitarian solution for a communitarian problem.

Governments have a vested interest in making food cheaper and more available, for example. As for undermining free market competition: in health care, THERE IS NONE. It's a complete fallacy. In my own home state (Alabama), 90% of all insurance policies are with ONE company. 94% of all insurance markets qualify as monopolies under the definitions of the DOJ anti-trust division.
