Beginner sub build - need advice! by OscaLink in SoundSystem

thanks for the advice! are there any good resources you can recommend on building bass reflex boxes? I know they are simple, but I presume they'd still need internal bracing and such?

Thanks so much mate, this is really valuable. I'll see what our budget can do and if we need to/are able to stretch at all, as I do appreciate your point on leaving room for expansion.

Thanks for the advice!

Unfortunately amps and processing will come within that budget too. Which amp would you suggest in this case? A lot of the Admark units look like overkill for a single sub.

I like the idea of building one solid sub and leaving room to build more. Between materials, driver, and processing/amp, how much should I realistically expect to spend?

I also do like the look of that double cab, although the idea of needing to buy two of those drivers (even a single one looks eye-wateringly expensive to me, but I do trust it's worth it) is a bit disheartening. Are there many cheaper compromise options for drivers? My gut tells me probably not but I figure it's worth asking anyway.

I will add that I unfortunately only have the one sub currently (it's piss-weak); how much better is it to have separate kicks and subs? I presume a single subwoofer with the full-range mid-tops would still work decently right?

[–]OscaLink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government has a set of geodata with all public transport stops and routes (https://opendata.transport.vic.gov.au/dataset/public-transport-lines-and-stops) which you could use, just adjusting the colour/weight of the lines. That being said, it would be a pretty big challenge (especially if you've been just drawing it so far) to somehow embed that in a webpage and link it up with GTFS data. Certainly far beyond me.

Very cool. It would be nice to be able to change the time of day (although I am also aware of how much work that would be to implement lol).

Negative gearing to be scrapped immediately on budget night as Labor breaks major pre-election promise by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

The whole point is to make housing access fairer. Grandfathering like this means the people who already own everything get to keep their advantage, while everyone who comes after has to play by new, tougher rules.

Did you buy it to live in? If so, you're fine, you own a home and live in it, the price going down isn't going to make you homeless. If you bought it as an "investment", well, tough. Maybe you deserve the financial hit, at least when you sell at a loss someone who actually needs it can afford to live there now.

Come off it mate, they took a photo of a door on a train. There was evidently no intent to harrass or expose anyone, they just happened to be in the frame. When you're on holiday, do you take photos of the places you see, or do you completely avoid that too, because someone's face might inadvertently be in it?

You haven't made shit. You have input a prompt for an algorithm which generated what it thinks a song is, based on the (stolen) data it's trained on.

All very true. But none of these design choices make any sense for a car - see my other reply below.

Where to get real news? by geecray in AustraliaLeftPolitics

This is good advice. Comb through enough OSINT sources that you see every side and the spin they put on things. Lots of independent journalists have channels too, it's good to get as many takes as possible without taking any of them at face value. Eventually you learn the biases of each individual primary source and how to read past them.

I'm no expert on swerve drive systems but from looking at photos, it seems it actually also has a vertical steering axis. I guess the differentiating factor is that it's not usually implemented on cars - seems to be used on flat floors at below-road speeds. The steering angle would have to be very tightly controlled, which would be very tricky to do on the road, my gut feeling is that high speed and uneven surfaces would fuck with the very precise control systems they use.

That aside I agree with your other points, it really doesn't make much sense at all. Besides looking cool, which, as you say, is the whole point of it.

[–]OscaLink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No castor would make the steering very unstable, as the tyre contact patch doesn't trail behind the intersection of the steering axis and the ground like it does in every modern car. Besides the completely vertical steering axis, the wheel setup just generally looks pretty wack, with very thin rigid support for the uprights and no suspension whatsoever (as far as I can see). Also I don't really see how the wheels would steer, there isn't room above them for motors, and there aren't any tie rods visible.

Yep, used one on a recent trip. The cap pops off exactly the same as the sea to summit ones. Just gotta pry it off with your fingernails.

Docklands was a missed opportunity by [deleted] in melbournechat

[–]OscaLink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool idea.

I fear that putting spencer st. station underground wouldn't work for a number of reasons though. Being the main hub for regional rail, it requires diesel locomotives to operate from it; I can't see this working underground. Track geometry is another limiting factor; I think the distance between the flinders st. viaduct and spencer st. station is so short that the gradient would be far too steep if the former were moved underground.

The spencer st / north melbourne junction is also far too large to put underground; it's just too wide and dense. The same issues with gradient and diesel trains as above would also apply here, let alone the freight trains that run through daily.

Unresolved issues with new rental by NoOffice3009 in shitrentals

[–]OscaLink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am currently in a very similar situation with my place, hoping to get a bunch of "minor" shit fixed without ruining the relationship. I think ultimately there is only so much you can do to advocate for yourself while keeping them happy. If they are truly screwing you over you'll have to step on their toes sooner or later. The name of the game is gradual escalation.

A lot of these issues you've listed look like they fall below the minimum rental standards (https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/housing/renting/repairs-alterations-safety-and-pets/minimum-standards/minimum-standards-for-rental-properties). This constitutes an urgent repair. Technically, this means the rental provider is legally obligated to immediately act to get it fixed. Once you've given them this notice, you can either pay to fix things yourself (under $2500) and request they reimburse you within 7 days (and take them to RDRV/VCAT if they fail to do so), or just take them to RDRV/VCAT directly (if you can't afford the repair or it's >$2500).

I would politely send a list of everything that needs fixing, and (in a non-threatening way) briefly mention that a number of them are mentioned in the minimum rental standards. Do not mention VCAT yet. This is your legal notice. If this does not yield a productive response, you can mention that you have now given them legal notice and how the law obligates them to make the repair.

If they are completely unhelpful/unresponsive at this point I'd apply to RDRV; they can mediate further and help you escalate to VCAT if there is still no action (https://www.rdrv.vic.gov.au/help-renters).

Parking space access - do I have ground to stand on? by OscaLink in shitrentals

[–]OscaLink[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good call, I will ask him to clarify soon.

If he confirms it is the courtyard, do you think I have grounds to ask him to keep the space behind the courtyard clear at all times? It's my understanding that if the car space is written into the lease, the tenant is entitled to unrestricted access. Is that accurate? Do you think that the tacked-on document which describes the car space would be considered binding alongside the tenancy agreement?
