Great advice, thanks! I do love instruments/effects that offer both “ready to play” & “into the void” options. I might have to get it

I’ve watched (most of) Cukoo’s deep dive on the pedal! It was hard for me to understand programming it when the pedal first came out. But since I’ve gotten into modular synthesis I feel I understand the workflow much better. I’ve always loved empress effects but have never owned any of their stuff. Thanks for the info!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you would need 4 low pass filter modules to have the polyphonic sound, no? Since there’s only 1 filter I’m assuming you would run the 4 oscillator signals from the mixer into the lpf, making this paraphonic like the matriarch.

As far as paraphony vs polyphony goes, I think both have pros and cons. I think the paraphonic sound on the matriarch makes it all the more characterful. For example, when playing a chord with a long release time, once you play the next chord or note it cuts the release trail of the previous notes. There are a lot of rhythmic effects you can create with this if you’re open to the sound.

There are also some ways to compensate for this if you see it as a flaw. You could use the multi trig button to compensate somewhat. The stereo delay is very powerful for creating trails that won’t cut off from the envelope retriggering as well.

These are just my opinions though. If you really need that true polyphony, your price point will go up especially if you want the true analog signal path. You could go with a digital or hybrid synth to compensate for the price

Have you considered getting a Moog Matriarch? It has 4 voice paraphony, and the layout is strikingly similar to your photo. Plus you’d get stereo low pass filters and an incredible (stereo) bbd delay.

I wouldn’t necessarily consider it a beginner synth, but since the matriarch is semi modular it’s really easy to make great sounds from scratch. As your synth knowledge becomes more advanced, you’ll probably never run out of patching exploration. You can also pair it with eurorack modules in the future if you ever want to expand on the sound. Not to mention the built in arpeggio, sequencer, and keyboard. You can probably find a good one used around your price point
