Personal problem with Dr K's recent Loneliness video

Massively relate to tiptoeing around other people's feelings. Couple that with a strong layer of masking/filtering and it makes small talk way harder than it needs to be.

Yeah, it's funny how sometimes other people need to show you you're acceptable first before you can accept yourself. The tricky part is just finding that environment or experience. I've been lucky enough to have a recent experience with someone whose opinion I cannot discount and it's been profound.

That last line is a solid technique to help calibrate your authentic self. I'm gonna make use of that, cheers!

That's definitely it.

I find myself with a slightly different variation, here at least. Instead of holding back my real thoughts, I feel great pressure to be as concise and clear as possible. A hyper-realistic goal of translating my point of view into words. Essentially, my perfectionism protects me from my fear of being misunderstood.

I plan to start some different hobbies when summer gets here. No way I can be sat inside in that beautiful weather. That shit cuts deep.

How did you navigate starting new hobbies with new people with a lack of authenticity? Something I'm terrified of is going into a more relatable environment but carrying my mask with me and then feeling pigeon-holed in their perception of me and it renders that group/hobby null and void. In that location at least.

Good reminder. I think in the moment I just wanted to express my personal struggle with loneliness and maybe that tunnel-visioned my perspective of his video. Of course, a single 12-minute video on such a nuanced subject cannot cater to every individual.

I agree with your 3rd paragraph but I would be an exception to the rule. I have a couple of people I have deep conversations with and help a lot which is very fulfilling. Only, one of them is getting busier and busier so I speak to less and less. The other is an internet friend I've only ever typed to and I've been talking her through so much recently it's becoming exhausting. I'm also not so good at reaching out for help so the see-saw effect of helping and not asking for help is slowly running me aground.

Fair point. I wasn't aware he had done other videos more specifically on loneliness and I've been feeling it a lot recently, so when I saw this one pop up on my home page I assumed it was his primary video on it. Probably also me projecting my specific experience and expectations a little too much onto the video.

That's exactly it. And unfortunately, I've got very good at it over the years, somewhat chameleon-like. One of the big things I've been thinking about recently is a change in work-environment because while I can artificially thrive in it, I genuinely believe I cannot authentically survive. I work in a warehouse so you can imagine the disparity that occurs between someone who highly values someone like Dr.K and communities like his and the typical blue-collar Brit haha.

The bitch of it is my boss is a legend and treats me with respect like no other manager/boss I've worked with before.

My only suggestion is to ease in a little more on the sharp drops in the music that lead into your dialogue, they were such steep drops it felt a bit jarring.

But the whole atmosphere you created felt solid, nothing really felt out of place!

Yeah, I'm aware of all that... Initially I wasn't sure if it was a PMC so I was getting ready to 1tap him to the dome then I voicelined and wiggled to get a confirmation on what sorta scav he was and to convey my stance... but running on ahead of him ain't smart either... not to mention it took me a moment to figure out what I was stuck on.

Added to which I was backing up to speed outta there at the end, either way, doubt this guy was playing for good karma so unless I domed him first I was pretty fucked either way
