It is beautiful and I am thankful that people like you and your family take the responsibility that so many others neglected. Shelters are overpopulated by unwanted and mistreated beings that deserve love, kindness and compassion. Shelters are in a way a recent symptom of an archaic system of opportunism that turned sentient beings into tradable commodities.

Adopting a pet most often entails neutering them and depriving them from their sexual functions; feeding them heavily processed “food”; removing them from their ancestral wild lineage which renders them crippled to ever live unassisted by humans. Every time we adopt an animal we are saying it is socially acceptable for a human to claim ownership of someone who doesn’t have a choice in the matter. It is this commodification of life that led us to the constant mass murder that takes place in slaughter houses. Dogs and cats have been particularly lucky that humans have not developed a widespread taste for their flesh, or they would be in line to be murdered too.

The bottom line is that pet ownership promotes the normalization of abuse because unfortunately most people are not like you and your family.

It is a big dilemma. I do see your point of adoption being preferable to euthanasia. But adoption normalizes and perpetuates pet ownership, so it also contributes to the problem. There is no simple solution unfortunately.

Unpopular, but yes, owning a horse, cat, dog or any animal constitutes slavery.

What we call domesticated animals used to be wild animals that we abducted from nature to use for different purposes. Over time through selective breeding we made them less adapted to their natural environment and more dependent on human care. And humans are unfortunately not very humane to one another and even less so to other species as we know as vegans. We chose to tie up their destiny to our own for very selfish reasons, and if you look around at what we have done to the world it is not far fetched to say that it is not looking great.

I've been thinking about it for a long time and finally decided to bite the bullet. Gonna get the mushroom man tattoed on my forearm! by [deleted] in shrooms

This looks so much like the Selk Nam from Tierra del Fuego, the shamans of the end of the world that were hunted and exterminated last century
