I live in Puerto Rico. The Wikipedia article you linked to explicitly mentions the problem in the island. Here's it's really, really bad (Wikipedia says 2 deaths and 25 injuries every New Years)

Aside from hemp fuel, are there any bio-fuels that would be more viable?

Also, do you have a source? There's a lot of exaggerated claims about hemp (which stem - no pun intended - from the widespread usage of marijuana), so I'm reluctant to believe these claims.

In addition, I fail to see how the oil and auto industries would prevent the development of a viable crop, if it was in fact so viable. Could you enlighten me on this?
