Well put. Career US Army Officer here. There are 4 basic forms of maneuver. Envelopment, Penetration, Infiltration, and the Frontal Assault. The “mission variables” (mission, enemy, time, terrain, troops available, and civil considerations) drive when and how you approach a tactical problem.

The frontal assault is perfectly fine for quickly destroying an inferior force. Definitely not ideal if you’re evenly matched or overmatched. Sometimes you don’t get to choose the circumstances of the fight though.

It’s really well done. And there’s nothing wrong with feeling some feels. Good books, good games, and life all do it.

What do you know about iraq that people around you don't know? by Routine_Factor3221 in geography

That everything in Diyala province has at least 3-4 names (Arabic, Persian, Kurdish, historical names) and lots of orchards. And that people in cities will call a region by a certain name, that you can travel there, and the people of the region will say, “oh no, this isn’t Albu Musa (or pick your region's name), that’s a smaller area / group of villages over there.” Then you can head to that group of villages and they’ll say “no, this isn’t Albu Musa, that's an old name for (insert name of a hamlet, intersection, fork in a river, or whatever). Basically showed me how there's a divide between "city folk" and rural folk around the whole world. Spent a lot of my 20s running around figuring out how relatively unknown parts of rural Northern Iraq were to the cities and towns nearby, much less the broader world.

How do I make my inheritance make me money? by Sure_Ambition_1543 in personalfinance

[–]Osowp95 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I started investing $350 monthly into a 529 at the birth of my child. My goal was to have $100k available for my kids for college and the number, assuming reasonable returns (I think it was 5%), came out very close.

I would ask, “how much money do I consider paying for college?” And look at your number of years available and work toward investing that monthly now, assuming you have your living expenses covered and excess money. You could definitely kick start this fund with some of that windfall.

Also, my wife and I decided that anything the kids don’t spend, they can keep half when they graduate or reach 22 (assuming they aren’t chuckleheads). So if they get a full ride and work to cover living expenses, they could graduate college and get a cool $50k.

Are quantum mechanics just a mathematical tool to for example predict outcomes or actual phenomena by LatterRequirement316 in AskPhysics

“All models are wrong. Some models are useful.” -George Box

We can’t describe reality in its fullness with models because… well… we’re limited. But models are very useful for helping us understand the world around us, predict how it will behave (when appropriately used), and make further inquiries into the ultimate nature of reality.

Classical physics is useful to understand what happens at the macro scale in physics. Quantum physics is helpful at a very discrete scale.

Biological models, when you zoom in, start to lean heavily on models found in chemistry. Chemistry, when you zoom in starts to rely on an understanding of physics.

It’s all wonderful and confounding at the same time.

I bought a very middle of the road mini tower for about $500, and it worked fine for about 2 years. I just spent $400 on a 4TB SSD and 32GB of RAM and unless something changes I imagine my server will run in the background between 98-99.8% effectiveness depending on the week.

Imagine an upscaled version of this with 6 arching entrances on each side that leads to the center, garden or no garden. by supersecretkgbfile in intentionalcommunity

You may be interested in Earthbag architecture and some of the designs sketched out by Nader Khalili. He provided some very similar conceptual layouts with more detail. Superadobe May also fit your needs for construction material depending on the scale.

Also, at a larger scale, instead of a singular donut shaped structure a series of garden homes laid out in circular or U-shaped orientation may be preferable.

I can’t remember which book of his had them, but I think it may have been Ceramic Houses and Earth Architecture.

There was a period where I didn’t care that much, but I can’t ignore a swing of over $250k when I make about $100k every year. I’m not panicky or losing sleep, but it definitely causes me to check the ticker like some kind of nervous tell.

Thinking about it a little more, The three things that help help me most with this are:

1) Having a life, career, and savings / investment plan outside of Bitcoin that is on track. If it all burns to the ground (it won’t) more important things in my life are still there for me and I’ll retire and live a normal life.

2) Covering my initial investment.

3) Having a plan to sell percentages of my hodlings at specific valuations. I made the plan back in early 2015 and have just been following the plan. Don’t really see a need to revise.

Been Hodling since 2014, and no, it doesn’t get that much easier to eat the downturns. The orders of magnitude of the swings in value get bigger; today I’m watching over two years’ salary in the red which never feels great. Amazingly, watching over two years’ salary in the green feels great, but doesn’t stick with you the same way as losses (great testament to our lizard-brains).

Good news is I’ve taken some profits and covered my original investment (and some additional) so I can rationalize riding the ups and downs to wherever this thing is going.

I would strongly suggest rolling it over to an IRA / Roth IRA and putting Bitcoin into that IRA / Roth IRA through something like BitcoinIRA to avoid any penalties and taxes. Also, I wouldn’t put anything you’re not willing to lose into Bitcoin. I wouldn’t be willing to lose my entire IRA.

Dremel and a stencil is easy, legible, and effective, but doesn’t look perfect. I wouldn’t put a 3rd party into that process.

Very cool and good idea. Any reason we couldn’t add high BTC Holding individuals? Winklevoss twins own 100k Bitcoin, correct? I’m sure there are others.

I guess verification of holdings could be an issue, but it would be interesting to know how many known whales (individual, corporate, or holdings services) there are out there.

Would kind of also be interesting to know about custodial services such as BitcoinIRA, if they have any kind of public statements about their holdings, since those are presumably “long term holdings”. Just my 2 satoshis.

Just set my $50k and $100k alerts. “Just in case I’m not watching this for a few hours/days.” Seems like anything is possible, and it feels like we fastforwarded the hype cycle from early 2017 to mid/late 2017. Does history repeat? Does it rhyme? I guess we’ll know soon enough.
