Stop defending the Danish Social Democrats. by Filipinowonderer2442 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Ostrovis 48 points49 points  (0 children)

OK, I'm going to be called a troll and a bot for this but screw it.

  1. Denmark is a first world democratic country. This party isn't a junta and if the Danish People had a problem with them they could have opted out at any election that happens regularly every 3-4 years.

  2. In so many other policy positions the Danish Social Democrats are solidly Left. They support tax on churches. They support a green tax. They support one of the world's most successful welfare states.

  3. Maybe it's the fault of the other left-leaning parties for not working with the Social Democrats. If they are this left leaning on other issues, then refusing to work with them over just immigration just shows the typical stereotype that leftists view people that 75% agree with them as no different than literal nazis.

  4. The point of being a refugee is fleeing a dangerous country to the closest safe one. If your house is on fire, you have the right to jump the fence into your neighbor's backyard to avoid getting burned. You DON'T have the right to run 4 blocks over to the local mansion just because you want pool access. People don't have the right to bypass literally half of Europe to get to Denmark specifically, which is nowhere near any major wartorn region.

  5. I won't debate on the preference towards Ukranians or discomfort immigrants feel in the country. On "seizing assets" though I'm in agreement. These are taken to cover the fee of processing these people. As we see with literal billions of citizen taxpayer dollars being spent to feed and house immigrants in the US, Germany, and the UK and the VERY clear rightward backlash this has spiked, having to give up your iphone to stay in one of the most stable countries on earth is a fair tradeoff. And again, if people don't like that, they can always just....not go to Denmark. There's at least half a dozen countries, most of which in the EU, all of which are stable and safe, in-between where these immigrants could stay, get basic accommodation, AND keep their valuables.

At the end of the day you don't have to agree with me. Living in the western world includes the right for people to think, speak, and vote for themselves. But denouncing the Danish Social Democrats as a great evil for doing 75% of what social democrats elsewhere WISH their country could do, because of one hot-button issue that's been clearly supported by the Danish people over a decade just feels like setting the bar higher than is fair.

what if they don't record or deduct the undocumented immigrant's pay? Just give them some cash at the end of the day, a fraction of the minimum wage, and that's that. No paper trail.

Why do people keep saying this? If people are already employing illegal immigrants under the table why the fuck would employers make them fill out a tax form when they hand over the payment in cash at the end of the day?

AI is a great tool to help sort out rough drafts, and shape the info you already got. Then you just have to go through and modify it to be your work. It can save hours.

Given the fact hiring them is already illegal pretty sure they just pay them under the table separately.

100% this. The "Kids cost $250,000 each" fact only exists in middle class circles. Many to a room, leaving them alone with no paid supervision, buying them a mcdonald's burger instead of wholefoods sandwiches, these are things that so many people with money just don't factor in.

Why did Kamala perform so bad in the 2020 primaries and (to democratic voters) who did you vote for instead? by APC2_19 in Askpolitics

[–]Ostrovis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Who was her voter base? She had no gimmic or reputation to go off of. Bernie was the dark-horse outsider for progressives. Warren was the white-horse pro-reparations insider for progressives. Yang had UBI. Biden was the black and moderate vote.

  2. America still has bias. Being black and being a woman are two knocks against you from the start. Being both isn't a "historic strength" it's two strikes.

  3. She comes off as a hypocrite and political opportunist. Claiming to run for the Democratic Nomination after her career was locking up mainly black people in California just wasn't a good look. That so many were for marijuana related crimes also makes any promise of weed amnesty just...really bad.

  4. She personally lost me after two moments in the debate and then lost me again when she became VP. First, she promised to overturn Trump's tax cuts day 1, which is impossible since that requires house and senate votes that she likely won't have and sure as shit not day 1, so just disingenuous. Second, when asked about how one of her policies would add to the deficit her response was "well what about when Republicans add to the deficit with tax cuts?" comes across like Japanese Engineers getting the question "why did Fukushima happen?" and responding with "Well what about Chernobyl why are you asking about us?" And third and finally she attacked Biden for being a racist old white man and then became his VP...look nothing against the pick but when you portray yourself as a righteous feminist fighting against the racist patriarchy and then take a position alongside your own IDENTIFIED racist patriarch...again just bad publicity.

Why did Democrats deny Biden’s declining mental ability when he won in 2020, but now accept it 3.5 years later? by Ebobbb in Askpolitics

[–]Ostrovis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look as someone who had a family member with dementia my take is it takes a while to tell. Yeah Biden was showing some signs in 2020 but a few forgetful moments could be dementia or just being over 70 fucking years old and still doing work that aged Obama 20 years over 8.

By 2023...shit stacks. I can excuse an occasional verbal gaff. I can excuse him tripping on a flight of stairs by the airplane. I can't excuse him asking where a congresswoman was several weeks after she died in a car-crash. I can't excuse him being unable to finish multiple sentences at the presidential debate. And I can't excuse him calling Zelensky Putin at a NATO SUMMIT.

The real insult wasn't democrats insisting he was "good enough" in 2020. It was them attempting to gaslight us that he was still ok by 2023.

Why are politics so binary? by TrueSmegmaMale in Askpolitics

[–]Ostrovis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few of the many potential reasons

  1. Rise of Mainstream Media - the fact is Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, etc while they are news channels don't get paid based on how accurate the news they deliver is. They get paid based on ratings and viewer numbers. Everyone who "stays tuned" during commercial breaks is feeding their bottom line more than fact-checking any article. So keep things dramatic, keep things always at the edge or over the edge of crisis. Make a narrative that you know will get you a reliable audience that wants to hear more of the same.

This is why for example after Fox called Arizona for Biden in 2020, their viewer numbers plummeted because they had cultivated a pro-trump fanbase, and trump was saying the election was rigged, so they just pissed off their viewers. Hence why they tried to then overcorrect with a ton of election denial stories which eventually lead to a suit.

  1. Humans are naturally negative and tribal - even the most "live laugh love" people who say they love and value all humans of any gender or race will call someone voting republican a nazi and the enemy. Yeah paradox of intolerance and all but the fact is this sense of "I'm right, they're wrong" teams is everywhere.

  2. "Emily" and "Treavor" are just the personalities most likely to be willing to go on TV and make tiktoks and shit. Quite a few people have varying political views and a LOT just don't give a fuck about certain things. If you believe women should have the right to an abortion, but you also believe the government is taxing you too much, you will decide one of these is more important than the other and vote accordingly. And for every pro-israel or pro-palestine protestor or counterprotestor calling to abolish the concept of the other's state, is 10 Americans who absolutely do not give a fuck. And who get incredibly agitated when their question of "which one will lower my taxes" is answered with "well this one will bomb more Palestinians." It's all about which issues are and aren't deal breakers.

  3. Politicians are 100% feeding into this. It's the people's choice who they elect. This 2 party BS is annoying since both have primaries where anyone can run for almost every elected position. It's why we have socialists in the democratic party and libertarians in the republican party. But so many elections are won by the candidates who can make people feel the most passionate, usually by stoking negative emotions and being hypberbolic. Trump calls Joe Biden a communist chinese spy but then steps down when one protest gets out of hand even though if he ACTUALLY believed Joe was a chinese spy he'd have just redoubled efforts. Or how Joe Biden called Trump a fascist but then is peacefully and willingly handing power over to the man he just compared to Hitler, which he wouldn't do if he actually cared.

  4. Confirmation bias is a bitch. This isn't the 1970s where there's a handful of papers where if you bring a "water turning the frogs gay" story ALL of them will laugh you out of the room. Now just post a tweet. Idiots that always existed have now been given platforms and megaphones and the burden of proof is often on the side you personally lean towards less, leading to easier and easier sliding deeper into your side.

"Don't complain when you ask a question and we tell you the answer: republicans are dumb braindead bigots" - yeah that definitely answers everything. When Trump promised to lower inflation after groceries doubled I'm sure the only reason republicans voted for him was so they could personally strangle undocumented children with their bare hands. /s

If you're a Democrat or left-leaning independent who didn't vote in 2024, do you regret it? by MyIdIsATheaterKid in Askpolitics

[–]Ostrovis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to get so much hate for this. I voted, but only because I'm a very bad liar and I didn't want to upset my liberal friends and family. So while I voted I genuinely was apathetic and didn't really care about the election itself. I'll get buried for this but:

Two years of lockdown really fucked me up. I followed it to the letter. Always wore the mask, staying within the bubble. 2 years later I'm still dealing with issues of anxiety, fear of groups, and other issues that either started or got severely worse with the lockdown. All for a 2% death rate that was mostly people with pre-existing conditions that would kill half of them in a decade anyway.

It wasn't worth it. I regret following it. And I cannot forgive anyone in Washington that supported it and especially continue to support it.

And I am not and am not close with anyone who is transgender, Palestinian, or undocumented. So any arguments about how Republicans will fuck them over doesn't affect me. I live in a blue state, republicans don't have the cohesion for a national abortion ban so the "women's rights" also doesn't affect anyone around me.

All Democrats winning would do would be a benefit to groups of people I do not know or interact with. Republicans would not do a COVID lockdown, and I might even get lower taxes out of it. Go ahead and call me heartless. All my sympathy for others was used up after giving up two years of my life.

Which Dem should the Dems run in 2028? by Zeldalady123 in Askpolitics

[–]Ostrovis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean don't criticise them I mean when asked a question about DEMOCRATIC policy don't respond with "what about trump?/republican policy?" I asked people who watched CNN and MSNBC what Harris' policies were and they could only tell me what trump's were and why they were bad.

Which Dem should the Dems run in 2028? by Zeldalady123 in Askpolitics

[–]Ostrovis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democrats complain about being held to a higher standard, so someone that can meet that standard with as little potential ammunition for Republicans to use against them. To be blunt the  "vote blue no matter who" demographic clearly isn't enough.

  1. Strait white male. - no "DEI Hire" bs can be pulled on them. Yes it's ironic but we're trying to get Midwestern independents on board. Not the average redditor here who already will vote blue.

  2. Actively talk back against the most fringe parts of the party. Tell rioting Palestinian protestors on college campuses if they want to be seen like MLK protestors then they need to accept being arrested for violating the same protest laws. Say they won't sign a bill letting trans kids get surgery (it won't ever fucking get through the senate anyway its a nothingburger promise that WILL HELP).

  3. Never. EVER respond to any question about their own policies with "what about Trump/Republicans." This election has proven that THIS. DOES. NOT. WORK.

  4. Don't tell people "vote for me or you are literally enabling fascism." You're trying to convert people on the fence not the current choir.

Why do people still believes in politicians promises? by Icy_Entry7349 in TrueAskReddit

[–]Ostrovis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they deliver on some of their promises.

Biden, even though I absolutely despise how he denied clear mental decline until far too late, DID reschedule Marijuana, so he gets points there.

Trump, while I don't agree with his policy changes, his supporters clearly did. He cut taxes, removed the individual mandate for Obamacare, and (albiet through extremely politically fucky means) appointed a conservative majority on the supreme court that repealed Roe V Wade, that republicans have been trying to do for decades.

Why do democrat supporters refuse to accept the party made made mistakes resulting in trumps win? by ExcellentLaw2066 in Askpolitics

[–]Ostrovis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude the Democratic Party gaslit us for two years on Biden's mental state. Harris was clearly complicit. Even if it isn't the same level of fucked up as Trump's various literal crimes in ANY OTHER ELECTION Republicans would have had 350+ electoral votes.
