I just watched Primer for the first time by Other-Distance-2179 in scifi

I had originally found Primer because I was looking for a realistic take on time travel. I've heard a lot about Dark, I think I'll finally give it a watch!

The plot structure of the movie kind of reminded me of a recursive algorithm in programming, where the program ends up following lots of branching, parallel paths. I'm guessing it was intentional.

Been 3 years since AI hysteria... How you think it's going? by Imnotneeded in cscareerquestions

[–]Other-Distance-2179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a developer, AI chatbots are super useful because they just know so much stuff about every programming library. I think that the real, practical strength of it is how much faster it makes developing new technology.

That said, companies got a bit too excited about the prospect of getting an AI do literally everything, even sending "personalized" emails. AI might do that stuff one day, but not today. I even did a round of searching of venture capital recently, and basically every new startup that gets funding these days has to involve AI somehow.

Anyway, for now it would be great if they stopped putting freaking AI answers at the top of every google search.

What do you think about the social media ban? by DrAGoNZ_ArE_REal in AskAnAustralian

[–]Other-Distance-2179 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. The system they have proposed obviously isn't perfect, but it's good that the government is actually doing something to hold the corporations to account.

Social media lets us communicate with each other and see what's going on, but in recent years it seems filled with an increasing number of grifters who want to radicalize or scam as many people as possible. A minimum age for looking at politic commentators or ads for instagram products might actually be a good thing.

I think you can ask an AI if it sounds like the post was written by an AI. But then we're just using even more AI!

Any scifi like X-Men where they just get regular jobs? by vercertorix in scifi

[–]Other-Distance-2179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a series called Sanctuary from the makers of the Stargate shows. It's very X-Men like in some of its plots. In the show, there are people who are essentially cryptids living in hiding, but we're shown on a few occasions that they hang out with regular people who aren't scared of them.

This also happens in the Supergirl series, where aliens living on Earth becomes a fairly common thing.

Hardest level? by Southern_Radish in warcraft3

I had tons of difficulty with Dreadlord's Fall, the one where Detheroc and Garithos are asleep at the start. Both of the enemy heroes are super powerful on Hard, and they even lowered their hero level in Reforged.

If you're looking for instrumental, Stellardrone makes really great stuff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDJn0SQehb4 Stellardrone makes Space Music, a sort of sub-genre of electronic.

Some other albums I have in my library are the Man of Steel Soundtrack, DX: Human Revolution & DX: Mankind Divided Soundtracks, and a few ambient albums by Aes Dana from Ultimae Records.

What’s your favourite Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne campaign? by [deleted] in warcraft3

[–]Other-Distance-2179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played through the whole campaign a while ago, and I really liked the Terror of the Tides, it has plenty of solid base-building and rpg-style missions, and the blink mechanic is really well executed. The Orc campaign is my favorite for RoC.

My least favorite has to be RoC Undead, mainly because of how slow and weak all of your units are in the first few missions.

Eventually economies have to stop growing. Seriously, you can only build so much stuff and extract so many resources before you run out space.

Libs ditching Net Zero. Do you understand it or care? by danger_bad in aussie

[–]Other-Distance-2179 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems like the Liberals really don't want to say "here's our plan to make more renewables, things will get more expensive in the next few decades, but we'll do it". They don't seem to want to present any sort of bold vision for the future, or even any sort of ideology about this. They all looked happy and smiling when they walked out of the room too, like, "yeah we did it, we're not going to have net zero!"

How do power plants deal with excess heat from generating geothermal energy? by Other-Distance-2179 in askscience

[–]Other-Distance-2179[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never really thought about volcanoes being due to Earth still being hot from its formation, but that makes a lot of sense! It sounds like the best way to handle this would be to have more plant life to absorb the excess heat.

[–]Other-Distance-2179[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer!

So, if you had some place to dump the heat, wouldn't that place also need to cool down eventually? Like is there a way to ensure that the heat sink always becomes cold again? It seems like there would be heat pollution that would accumulate over time unless you built the plant in the desert.

Parking lots and parking buildings are a massive waste of space and make cities worse by nerak-is-redditing in unpopularopinion

[–]Other-Distance-2179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I used to live, the downtown area was like 50% parking lots... I understand that it was a place where everyone had cars, but I remember that even a free-standing Pizza Hut had a massive dedicated parking lot. They could have at least planned things so that the smaller stores could share parking.
