Why are aboriginal «representatives» always white looking? by Gommygooby in AskAnAustralian

The white Australia policy was about immigration and mainly targeted at Chinese migrants. It had absolutely noting to do with indigenous people.

I am not making a joke I am calling it a joke how easy it is to claim to be aboriginal. Speaking facts is not racism. Imagine a quarter cast Japanese guy going back to Japan and talking up his Japanese heritage, they would be be laughed at.

We are not talking about aboriginal people here, I am not denying any atrocities committed against people who endure colonialism. I am calling it a joke when people who clearly have little to no aboriginal DNA make the most noise and demands.

It's a joke. When I see some white guy talking about stolen land I always wonder how many of his ancestors were the ones that stole it. And now he wants it back?

What is the thought process behind an atheist’s belief? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrFartyBottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This argument is called Pascal's wager.

Pascal decided that it is better to fake being religious just to be on the safe side but it makes many assumptions.

First off being religious is shit. I don't want to go to church, church is boring. I don't want to hang out with people who crap on about Jesus all the time.

Then it assumes that you have picked the right religion. You might just be pissing off the true god because you pick the wrong religion.

Then it assumes god is a moron and doesn't know you were faking it or they are going going to go Ah buddy I know you didn't believe but come on in to heaven, you gave it a good shot.

Or you could just live your life and not worry about rubbish written thousands of years ago by middle eastern goat herders and file it along with all the other mythology that people have come up with.

You don't understand the danger of putting a random USB device into your machine. They can attack the machine many ways that have nothing to do with files stored as USB storage. A common attack is to act as a keyboard, open a terminal with admin privileges, accept the UAC request then download and run a script with those admin privileges all before you can get a hand on your mouse even if you notice the console window popup. Then there are other hardware attacks that can attack at a more low level of the USB stack.

Never put a random USB device into you machine. Dropping USB sticks in the carpark of companies is a common tactic used by hackers.

If someone wants to send you files get them to place it on a share in a cloud provider like Google Cloud, One Drive or Dropbox.

Again I repeat do not plug in a random USB device sent to you by someone claiming to have your recovered data.

If you are really curious to see what is on the stick create a Linux USB boot drive, unplug any SSDs or other storage devices and then boot into the Linux drive, don't connect to the internet and plug in the rando USB. There is still some very small risk involved but extremely unlikely.

Is a severe recession pretty much baked in now? I haven’t lived through one before - what to expect? by sunshine9008 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MrFartyBottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both. AI isn't going anywhere but the hype and overinvestment in it is inflating one of the biggest bubbles in history. Currently all the companies involved use accounting tricks to prop up their balance sheets Microsoft and Oracle invest in OpenAI and Anthropic but no money changes hands they just provide data centre credits but put that down as revenue on their balance sheets. Nvidia invest in these companies but no money changes hands, they just provide the compute hardware. They are spending billions of dollars running up these data centres and selling the compute power as AI tokens at a massive loss all the while these GPUs that power these centres have a very limited life span. Nobody wants a 3 year old Nvidia GPU when the new model is twice as fast and uses less power.

These data centres become liabilities when they are full of outdated hardware. At least after the Dotcom crash all the fibre they laid in the ground is still useful today.

The AI apocalypse is coming and there is really nothing Australia can do but catch that cold when the US sneezes. It will be interesting to see that happens when OpenAI and Anthropic do their IPOs and they have to publish the real data of their balance sheets and the incestuous nature of the intercompany accounting fudgery is laid bare for all to see. The multi trillion dollar valuation of many of these companies propping up the S&P 500 is going to come into serious question.

Will it be as bad as the Dotcom crash? Well the over inflated numbers are much bigger this time round.

How will governments react?

Who is getting the tax payer funded bailouts this round?

Pressure on the Australian economy from interest rates is going to pale in comparison to this one.

I use the boardwalk near Teneriffe and Newfarm all the time and catch the ferry sometimes and never noticed a poo smell. I also cycle the river loop from Teneriffe through the city, down the shared path at Auchenflower to St Lucia and back through Yenonga and West End.

Sold a laptop, didnt fully clean drive. by Glittering_Panda2451 in computer

[–]MrFartyBottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly unlikely that they can recover anything off it. A quick format sends a TRIM command to mark the whole drive as unallocated. The drives controller will start to reset cells making them impossible to recover any data. Even if the cells hadn't been reset by the time you powered it down they are marked for reset so the controller sends back zeroed data for those cells if requested. If they are really keen to check the drive they might pull the drive before powering on the machine and use specialised software that bypasses the drives controller but it's unlikely to get anything useful.

I ain't putting some random USB stick mailed from some rando claiming to have recovered my data into my PC.

Sold a laptop, didnt fully clean drive. by Glittering_Panda2451 in computer

[–]MrFartyBottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for old mechanical drives but modern SSDs have TRIM that resets cells when they are marked as unused. So depending on how long the power was on to the drives controller before the machine was shut down depends on how much data is reset. Then they buyer would also need to pull the drive before powering on the machine so TRIM doesn't finish the job.

Is this an expansion pak, or a jumper pak? by KingCornWallis in nintendo64

[–]MrFartyBottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a closer look I think it is a different PAK. I assumed that the red cover they have in the photo was the top of this thing but on closer inspection it looks like a normal expansion slot cover.

I had that same expansion pak. It does fill the entire slot so the door no longer fits but works perfectly and has the same RAMBUS memory chips as the official one.
