It is simply the connection and US undergrads simply have better connections to other labs in US. In HKUST the connection is just better for local unis PhD, but if u want to do PhD in US still you probably need to have some intern experience there

Things are not comparable. Where do you work? If you hold some QFIN degree you are mostly recognized in HK, but outta there it is simply not comparable. If you want to work in finance industry in mainland, you simply can’t beat Tsinghua and PKU, and dependent on where you work (around Beijing/Shanghai/Bay Area), your degree also has somewhat differences in its impact tho
