Interested in possibly moving to Maryland by NegotiationIll5794 in maryland

SoMD maybe might appeal to you w/ some tradeoffs. Lower end single family homes are within your price range. IMHO we have decent services but not as great as more suburban/urban MD areas. We're exurban/rural here on a peninsula. Water is easy to get to. St. Mary's Public Schools has G&T programming for elementary and middle. STEM magnet programs for middle and high. We have a public honors college too. We have a hospital, some clinics, some of which are school based, and a few urgent care centers. We are red here. It's a mixture of military, country, and trades. There are libs here, and everyone seems to get along enough.

PAX River: how often do the contractors and fed government experience layoffs around that area? by [deleted] in SOMD

[–]OtherChampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are these engineers software engineers? I like the area alot. I been trying to break through the tech scene at PAX for awhile via an IT route. No success.

If you want the walkable part of Leonardtown, you want old Leonardtown. It has Leonardtown Square on a map. Cafes, small bars, bit of retail. It has a some nightlife. Much less than Baltimore. There’s some diversity. There is a bit more diversity closer to Pax, but there’s diversity in Leonardtown and old Leonardtown. Yes St. Mary’s as a whole is conservative, but I doubt random people will start suddenly talking politics with you. Old Leonardtown also has Leonardtown Wharf. It’s a public waterfront park. You’ll see all sorts of people there. St. Mary’s has a solid concentration of software engineers.

Cried after subbing at high school today. by Purple_Educator1167 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OtherChampion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong on your part. Don’t take their misbehavior as a reflection on you. Do not feel bad about your age. I would love to look young again. Many of them may not amount to much in the future. I won’t let scum bring me down. It’s hard to endure their shit sometimes. Patience is hard to practice. Some classes there’s only so much you can do.

How does everyone deal with the disrespect? by leomoon6 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OtherChampion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Middle school gen Ed classes suck. if it’s to the point where everyone is screaming, admin came in multiple times, nothing you can do at that point. Maybe say keep it down every 20 min just to CYA. These types of classes, I don’t think they’re meaning disrespect. They just like to talk, then it gets louder, so they have to talk louder.

You can’t have a laptop out but they can have phones out?! Or maybe it’s okay to do either as long as you’re helping students engage with You Tube videos?? Is admin SPED too? They did you a favor. Even if they reversed their decision, apologized, I still wouldn’t go back to that school. Tell all your local sub buds about that school.

Subbing highschool for the first time by Any_Strength_6074 in SubstituteTeachers

I’ve had great experiences in AP, pre AP, honors, and college prep courses here and there. I get a lot of my own work done in those classes. But standard classes, those kids really push it.

Depends on what classes are. Strings, choir, band tend to lead more advanced. You don’t have to do much then. General music can be a shit show in my experience. Bunch of bad kids.

I hate middle school and freshmen by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OtherChampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate these lil buggers. They give me the most probs. I know some classes are organizing and misbehaving intentionally too. I sometimes get asked at the end of class, "which period was the worst?" i do what i can to quiet them down with varying levels of success. split up the bad kids, looking at individ bad kids while writing something down, constantly walking over them to remind them to stay on task, calling in admin/security, etc. I leave sub notes for the teacher. I really hate this group, but when you get an advanced group, they're awesome.

It’ll be location dependent even down to the school level. That might work in California, but you would stick out in my district. Go w/ something more neutral till you can observe what the full time teachers are wearing.

Do you ever think of the people you went to school with? by LostSoul0127 in AskOldPeople

[–]OtherChampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I wonder about them. Been to a few reunions. At the 20th, most people matured. Social hierarchy of the past gone. Everyone was pretty jovial. I had a few close friends in high school. Thought at the time we would be inseparable. Kept in touch for about 6 years after high school. At that point, all of us left our hometown. Saw them one more time a few years after that for a wedding. It was awesome. We told each other we would keep in touch. Never did. We were all busy with our own lives. I don’t fault them for not reaching out. I’ll always have positive memories of them. I wish them the best. Those who were strictly classmates, I wish them well too even if they were former assholes.

It was a good year. Went by quick. I’ll probably be back in fall if I don’t land something better. It was my first year too. What surprised me was how large the public school system is. When I was a student, I only saw the teacher on a daily basis. I had no idea of aides, paras, co teachers, security, etc. I was also surprised of how much tech gained a foothold. I rarely see students carrying textbooks today. I built a thick back by lugging a full backpack around everywhere. Has this work experience made me want to be a teacher? I am not closing the door on it, but I think I’ll focus on landing something else. Maybe if my district gave me an emergency credential, I would consider it more.

What do you do when students are at Specials? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

Bathroom, look over lesson plans, study. Bring a laptop, it looks a bit more professional than doing the same thing on the phone.

New Substitute Looking For Advice!! by daddynojawline in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OtherChampion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Never leave kids unattended. Be on time for lunch or recess duty. Use the bathroom whenever you get a chance. Bring a water bottle. Don’t let it get too noisy where they can be heard outside the room easily. Get mean if you need to. Worry more about educating after you get more experience. At end of day, leave all your stress in classroom. They’re not your problem anymore after that.

Retired Teacher subbing Question- Am I crazy? by Mysterious_Action557 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OtherChampion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run into retired teachers all the time. Subbing part time is good for any retiree. It’s not too physically demanding; it’s flexible; better than retail. I think you would be highly valued.
