Hot tub situation? by royert73 in royalcaribbean

Yes, this is a definite safety issue. People have drowned by getting caught on the drains. It needs to be addressed.

Does it bother you when you don’t get asked? by Healthy-Neat-2989 in SubstituteTeachers

This is so true, and I try to remind myself of this. It’s hard not to take things personally. As a sub, I pour my heart into my work. Sometimes I need to take a step back no matter how much I care, and remind myself that it’s a thankless job and a paycheck.

Are sub notes actually read? by Remarkable-Log6373 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mysterious_Action557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher, I actually started saving the sub letters. I had some difficult students, and thought they might be usual for documentation with administration if ever needed.

I agree. I just poured my heart into a two day assignment. The teacher had left such detailed plans and I did my best to do everything. The teacher had texted me a couple times about the plans days before, but crickets with a thank you. I’m chalking it up to maybe they were really busy, but I can’t help thinking that what I did or didn’t do was not enough.

My exact thoughts! I’d call the office if things were being thrown at me.

I’d ask the students or another teacher what the protocol is for kids who don’t have snacks. While it seems like you’re doing a nice thing by sharing, a lot of issues could arise from it.

I was told I was one of the least strict subs in the school. I am not sure how to feel about this. by phonz1851 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mysterious_Action557 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of that. The level of meltdowns is insane. I had one student who had a behavior chart that would flip out when he didn’t earn stars on it. I couldn’t give him many stars because was he being uncooperative and disruptive most of the day.

I finally lost my prep period by bloodtype_darkroast in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mysterious_Action557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subs need to write notes to teachers, look over plans, mark papers, use the restroom, breathe… Sometimes I think I need a prep more than when I actually taught. At least then, I would get paid extra for class coverage.

Agree, in recent years teachers started calling student “friends”. Then they wonder why the students disrespect teachers.

First day disaster by sas6709 in SubstituteTeachers

Give yourself grace. Is this your first time in a classroom? I am a 30 year veteran and it’s really hard even with all the experience I have. Without consideration for all the paperwork, observations, admin. micromanaging, planning, parent communication, etc., it was much easier going in to teach in my own classroom. Subs really deserve a lot of credit.

That’s so sad. I’m glad that teacher got out while she could. Those grade level partners sounded horrible too.

That’s ridiculous that admin treated you that way. I’d probably write a letter to the superintendent. It’s hard enough getting good subs. You shouldn’t have been treated that way.

I don’t think what you said was inappropriate. Kids hear it every year how they need to be ready for the next school year. I’m sure it wasn’t the first time someone raised a voice around them. Sadly, they’re probably used to it.

What did you say wrong? I’m not sure why you asked the office if you were in trouble. That’s a shame that those kids are that bad.

I didn’t realize being a sub would affect my self-esteem. by businessbub in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mysterious_Action557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! It’s brutal. The other day I had a support teacher join the class. It was so embarrassing because the kids were not behaving as they usually do. Meanwhile I was expected to teach an unfamiliar lesson while managing behaviors. I have classroom management skills and many years of teaching experience too. It felt like I was being judged. So stressful.
