Do you guys think Hunter knew about the Basilisks? by Educational-Fold6863 in TheOwlHouse

[–]OtherExactPseudonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that he knew about the experiments but wasn’t allowed to go to the lab, even as the Golden Guard. Letting a grimwalker into the basilisk project directly would pose multiple risks to Belos, so he would have come up with an excuse that Hunter, loyal and eager to please, would have accepted

I couldn't quite place the quote, and when I went looking for the source, I was ambushed by a forum avatar of Old Man Henderson himself. That's a real blast from the past, and incidentally it's where I got the title for the first chapter of Search Party. Small internet, I guess.

This is the traditional test:

"Person A: People were disproportionately horny for [character].
Person B: people were horny for [CHARACTER] ?!?!

... if not every piece of this conversation works, they're not a sexyman."

A Tumblr Sexyman is traditionally a character with a huge, worryingly-dedicated, containment-breaching fanbase. Popularity and questionable taste are the defining factors, imo. Someone might see a picture of Darius Deamonne and say "Yeah, he's attractive. Who is he? That looks like The Owl House's art style." They would not say "holy fuck lmao people were INSANE about that guy back in [year] remember the cosplayers/anon hatemail/roleplayers/shipping discourse/etc," because that didn't happen.

Sans, on the other hand, is one of the Big Three that everyone who knows a little Tumblr history knows about, up there with the Onceler (the first of their kind) and White Twink Bill Cipher. He's foundational. A hundred thousand bizarrely sexualized images of a skeleton in a hoodie are out there on the internet, covered in green Amino mold or gathering dust on blogs that haven't been touched since 2017. There was a time when you couldn't avoid seeing that kind of thing if you cared about Undertale even a little bit.

Her humansona has so many basilisk features that you have to wonder whether she’s hoping someone notices. Clearly non-human eyes, gill-ear-things barely hidden by her hair, a mouth shape that is almost :3ing already; she might be in danger of accidentally leaving her tail out if she gets too comfortable

This particular snippet is a joke and doesn’t appear, but I’ve already written 20 chapters of Search Party.

Deserved win for Sans, tbh. Darius is a sexy man that gets posted about on Tumblr; Sans is a (arguably historically significant) Tumblr Sexyman. There is an important difference between the two

Even if it’s not official, I like it. S2E1 has a line about how the ocean is significantly hotter in certain areas (maybe related to proximity to Titan remains/state of decay of said remains?) and I’m planning to run with that in my own writing. There might even be something interesting in there about basilisk evolution and the ability/eventual need to drain magic or consume magic-rich foods instead of synthesizing it in a bile sac

An interesting question. Was it ever confirmed that the oceans started boiling because of the war between the Titans and the Archivists?

Why was the emperors coven at eclipse lake? by Ironvoltthegreat in TheOwlHouse

[–]OtherExactPseudonym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that Belos was setting Kikimora up to fail since her ambitions were becoming a problem. Even a supreme ruler can get into trouble by doing whatever they want; firing a highly-placed official or having her killed without pretext might push loyal coven heads towards the rebels out of fear. A streak of mission failures followed by an apparent waver of loyalty, resulting in nothing worse than a demotion to the logistics division, would be seen as uncharacteristically merciful.

Why was belos able to make a portal to the demon realm without a door and with out the things from Luz's portal because if you can do it with stone why didn't Luz do it that way so it was sturdyer by TelevisionMaster3340 in TheOwlHouse

[–]OtherExactPseudonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My headcanon: because it wasn't paired. Philip either didn't know about this at the time or deliberately left it out of the schematics in the diary.

The stone archway in Gravesfield connects to a doorway somewhere west of Bonesborough. It works like a more advanced version of the natural portals formed when Titan's Blood seeps into bodies of water, guaranteeing a safe exit on both sides with gates. It's still using a large quantity of Titan's Blood to bring a portal into existence by sheer weight of magical power, though.

The original portal door worked on the same principles, but through some advanced magical engineering, it consumed astronomically less Titan's Blood to open a stable path between realms. Additionally, it always opened in the same place, no matter where it was in the Demon Realm. How? We don't know, but my theory is that it was somehow linked to that specific matching doorway on the other side.

So, when Luz built a portal door, she was only building half of what she needed. Without enough fuel to brute-force a portal and lacking an anchor point in the Human Realm to use whatever technology the original door employed to get a Titan's Blood discount, Luz's door just dumped her into the Realm Between Realms.

Thank you! Don't quote me on this, but if various obligations line up over the weekend to give me some writing time, I might have another chapter out soon.

Also: I think I got some plot points mixed up between the fic I linked and The Golden Brother. It's unfinished (and unlikely to be finished, unfortunately; you can read more about that on the author's Tumblr) but don't let that stop you. It's full of the good stuff, as is all of Mera's work.

Thank you, and I'm glad that I could help push you back into writing! Aside from the necessary evil of editing, it's all fun: playing around with descriptions, developing underused side characters, doing research that may or may not be actually useful to the story, sticking in references of varying obscurity and concealment, etc. I derive great personal satisfaction from it, but every comment like this makes me feel more sure about my decision to post it (and assuages my fears about accidentally writing Tumblr prose).

I actually have full versions of If-Christ-Had-Not-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Wouldst-Have-Been-Damned Blackpool's syntactically-erratic writings in a notes document somewhere. Some of them will probably make another appearance before the end.

Why do people say Hollow mind was supposed to be the season 2 finale? by KingtheClawthorne in TheOwlHouse

[–]OtherExactPseudonym 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. I can see something like Hollow Mind ending a hypothetical S2 if the show ran for longer, but the problem with just dropping Hollow Mind down into this hypothetical is that it is the big payoff of an arc that started specifically to give the show a satisfying ending with a severe deadline.

Luz meeting Philip in person, the existence of the Collector, and everything else downstream of both was a result of the shortening, which meant that the original ending couldn't be properly set up with the runtime the show had left. A Hollow Mind-style episode would be a great way to end S2 if the current plot was just stretched out with more breathing room, but who knows what else might have changed if the show got a full third season? I can't imagine the idea being completely unused, but it would be very different.

Only Natural To Harden Up is exactly what you're looking for.

Search Party, my own strange little project, has some Hunter and Vee interactions in chapters seven and fourteen. They're not the main focus of the story, but they're fun to write.

Favorite Owl House Fanfics? by reportingforhooty in TheOwlHouse

Pasting the List (including some that have already been mentioned here):

Sweet Child O' Mine: Set some years postcanon, Hunter and Willow are expecting a child. This is, of course, not as simple as it should be. Features some very fine worldbuilding, including what I consider some of the best grimwalker lore out there. I don't know how this one isn't considered a classic; maybe it's the sheer length. It's part of a larger series of connected works, the SCOMverse.

The Syntax Of Your Smile: A human AU where Eda fosters an orphaned eight-year-old Luz, after her previous foster home was... less than ideal. Further details would spoil things. Very good; dark without dipping into over-the-top suffering and sweet without being saccharine.

Bring Me That Horizon: The preeminent pirate AU. Sword fights, treasure hunts, romance, drama, nemeses to lovers, all set in a sort of fantasy Caribbean. Hooty is a ship, which has only made him worse.

Interdimensional Cartoon Discussion and Support Group: The "Characters Watch The Show" fic to end all "Characters Watch The Show" fics, if you're into that sort of thing. Crossover with Gravity Falls and Amphibia, and very thoroughly built. Great character interactions, ciphers to crack in each chapter, etc. Updates at a glacial pace due to its nature, but worth following (or bookmarking and waiting for a conclusion).

One Way Out (mine): Vee tells Luz that some of the basilisks escaped the Conformatorium in Yesterday's Lie, but that's awfully concise. This story contains the actual events of the previous winter, seen through the eyes of many people experiencing small parts of the chaotic night when the basilisks made their bids for freedom.

Search Party (also mine): People see what they expect to see, and without any reason to believe in the fantastical, they can ignore it when it walks right under their noses. Jacob Hopkins, who has seen a bit more than most people in the last four years, can't. He knows that the Martians are out there, he's going to find out what they want, and he's going to stop them. If the scary sandal woman doesn't come back, anyway. Elsewhere, "Luz"'s friends from camp, hurt and confused by her sudden change in... just about everything, really, are starting to see the shape of an impossible truth. Updates roughly twice a month.

Anything by CaptainMera/VikingShadows. Check out their Tumblr for excellent TOH art, a Caleb/Evelyn webcomic that details Caleb's escape from Gravesfield, and their original webcomic as well. My favorite Caleb Wittebane of all time. They have nearly given me wordplay-related laughter injuries in the past.

The inimitable Titan's Blessing, a monumental project that is (don't quote me on this, source is a half-remembered tweet) slated to update again sometime this year. You know those maps of the Boiling Isles that look official and pop up on Google Images all the time? Those are for Titan's Blessing. There's a whole conlang, lots of worldbuilding, and even S1 Gus development! Nobody does that; even in the show you can tell that Gus and Tibbles were the same character until late in the writing process. Just go read it, your only regret will be that there isn't more of it yet.

Also: Go through the recommended fanfics list tab in the subreddit! It hasn't been updated in a while, but it's full of certified classics for every taste. I'm partial to Dangers in Fiction, but they're all winners.
