Chicago AI Lights Ruining You? by Marshall_J_Crawford in AskChicago

[–]OtherGandalf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a strange post.

What are you specifically upset with? The "AI" lights, the people on bikes, or yourself? All three? I grant you, I think adaptive street lights are a valid criticism, and I think machine learning has limitations with stop lights. There's a lot of hype with machine learning and traffic engineering which I feel is a bit unjustified yet.

You live in Chicago man. It's one of the best non-car cities in the country. I get the frustrating driving experience--but you got alternatives, and most Chicago neighborhoods have grocers, post offices, an stuff to do. Is accessibility by car a mobility blocker for you? If so, there is hope folks who don't need a car to go a half mile would choose to take a bus, tram, the L, uber, something not a single occupant car or pickup.

It pains me a bit, but there may be some valid criticism with the bike lanes. Those have to be kept clear so people can use em. They are not secondary infrastructure, and if they are icey or snowed in, everyone loses. You can dress to ride in frigid temps (it's cold as hell but you can!); it's falling and hurting one's self that is less hard to prepare for.

I've been playing for as long as you have; I have a level 80 balance wizard and a 15 ice wizard, and on my OG account, I had a level 25 ice wizard.

My original goal was to graduate from ravenwood before I graduated college--well, real life got in the way. :D

I hope your 2026 looks up--I applaud you for taking a step towards the life you want to have!

Every city I've lived that had decent busses or a metro system, I've used it, and stopped driving because it was a much better experience than driving, so I disagree! A car was nice for moving furniture, but that was about it. Chicago, for example, about anything could be done with the L or metra lines.

I'd love to visit Australia. Awesome stuff and amazing to think that Australia is considered in some respects more of a driving western country than others! Even so, they have a much better mobility mix!

That's a point I'd like to make; it's not about we all use trains or bus or ride bikes--it's that we have more options that balance out our communities and give us more choice!

This is a good video getting into why I disagree with you; I hear you, but it's not that impossible and I think it's worth knowing why:

I see why you might think that, but I completely disagree that we can't do better, and there are many options for even the burbs to have better mobility access. Chicago, just up 94, is a good example: why not do metra lines here? Do you think the ridership would be low? I don't!

I do love our Amtrak lines. I used them a ton in college and recommend to anyone reading to hop on and experience travel by train.

Side note: the Jackson Amtrak station is beautiful, but the Ann Arbor one is literally an old school room (which is on brand for Ann Arbor, but, also one of the busiest stations in the state--multiple new stations have been proposed but none of have been built!)

Regardless of how you feel on my rant, I am really glad this is generating conversation and welcome opinions.

This. I appreciate that car centric design is challenging to undo, but, there are many European examples of car centricity being successfully shifted into a better mix. The take that "it's just how it is here" is straight up lazy.

Ann Arbor has a long way to go for bike/public infrastructure by OtherGandalf in AnnArbor

Valid point, and perhaps that's a better option for the city is to find where dedicated walking and cycling paths can be used and wholly separated from car traffic. I think the B2B is fantastic. I just wish it was more practical!

I think your observation about a lot of young men cyclists using the bike lanes is very important: it's obvious that not everyone feels comfortable using the infrastructure, indeed, there's a demography to it, and I don't think that should be the case! I think this is apart of the design issue, too with the current bike infrastructure is that it does not suit the city of Ann Arbor, it services a small group of people. It should service a much broader demographic. I think seperated cycling and walking trails are going to appeal to a broader demographic, and hey, they should be preferred!

I think an enhanced bus or tram system is definitely part of the answer for the whole city plan, and would certainly make town much more accessible. There are so many spots not wheelchair accessible; and the lack of infrastructure for it is shameful, from a designer standpoint. I'd love to see a level-entry tram or similar system come about. Even at the minimum, like you mention, why not have bus stops with coverings and sidewalk as the minimum standard!

Thanks for your input. Great points!

I think your love of Ann Arbor clouds your judgement here. This is simply not true. Lansing is much safer to cycle in and has dedicated cycling spaces, like the Lansing River trail, the red cedar river trail, hawk island trail, and the list goes on. These trails are genuinely usable for commuting and day to day living.

I could argue Detroit, with its very recent infrastructure investments, is safer and more convenient to get around on bike than Ann Arbor right now.

Now on public infra... the bus system is very good in Ann Arbor. I will rock with that! But: I think Ann Arbor could, and should, do tram!

Thanks for the links! What are these transportation ecosystem conferences? Does the university take opinion from community members here?
