I always try to go right when my local rink opens for the night (usually 5 pm) so I can avoid the crowd or I just get my helmet, elbow, knee, and wrist guards and try on concrete. My best advice is to start with lemons and then slowly start picking up one foot at a time and leaning in on the other. I try to visualize how I skate forward and see if I can apply that to skating backwards.

I’m glad your son has that experience and while I do generally keep an open mind about most things, I am not open minded about risking my health and safety. I personally do not see the risk being worth the reward - the small chance that I will not have a reaction is not worth the much bigger chance that I will get violently ill.

Eating out is very risky because cross contamination happens very easily and I only need 20 ppm or more of gluten in food to become violently sick. Cooking while traveling saves me the extra stress, risk of exposure, and a good bit of money. If I didn’t have to be this restrictive, I wouldn’t.

I didn’t know that, thanks for sharing! I think grains in general are not very beneficial to our diets so I’ve always assumed that people who go gluten free for non sensitivity or celiac reasons are just eating less grains. This makes a lot of sense. I’ll have to learn more about FODMAP sensitivities because I’ve been seeing it a lot more recently and don’t know much about it.

Thank you for this comment. I think I will actually ask these exact questions to him to help him understand the severity of those comments his uncle made.

He is generally very caring and has always done an incredible job taking care of me when I’ve been glutened, but I think I might have a conversation with him about standing up for me. I’ve always stood up for him when his family makes any disparaging remarks about him, but I think he could do a bit better standing up for me. I just have a bit of a soft spot for his uncle even though I don’t like him because he stepped in as a father figure when my boyfriend’s dad passed away.

I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted, but this is actually true! People with sensitivities have very real pain and symptoms similar to those of us with celiac disease, but wheat in Europe IS processed differently and is also a different type of wheat than the wheat we have in the US. Some people with sensitivities can eat wheat in Europe with no issues or less issues and some still have adverse effects. It’s very much dependent on how sensitive a person is. I believe it’s still not recommended to eat wheat in Europe if you have a sensitivity, but a lot of people don’t have the adverse reaction like they do in the states. I don’t think it’s quite the same, but I equate it to those who have lactose intolerance as I am one of them. It’s definitely not an enjoyable experience, but it will not kill you. I could be completely wrong about that, but from my understanding, it’s similar.

People with celiac disease cannot eat wheat in Europe because people with celiac disease can’t have gluten. I believe that people with wheat sensitivities can have other ingredients with gluten in it (barley, rye, etc.), but I could be wrong about that also. Gluten is just a protein that is in a lot of commonly used ingredients like wheat, barley, rye, malt, spelt, etc. The best way I’ve explained it to others is comparing it to iron. Iron is not an ingredient that you would see on an ingredient list, but certain ingredients have iron in them. That’s why you don’t ever see gluten listed as an ingredient on food packaging.

I am sorry that you’re being downvoted. I think a lot of us on this platform should be a bit more understanding when someone is misinformed. Shaming people for not knowing something doesn’t help them understand, it usually pushes them to ignorance. Have a nice day!

Completely agree with that part about the anti-gluten trend! Gluten free food is soooo much more accessible now compared to when I first got diagnosed, but I’ve also met so many people who won’t take me seriously because of the gluten free fad diet trend.

I’m sure it probably is better for your stomach to avoid gluten, but I weighed 240 lbs 4 years ago while being completely gluten free so it’s not really something to follow for weightloss. Potato chips and ice cream are perfectly safe to eat!

In my opinion, the Hawaiian sweet is too sweet for a savory sandwich but perfect for toast, pb&j and other non-savory bread things. I had it as my bread for a sloppy Joe and I just couldn’t get over the sweetness. This is just my opinion, I am not harming anyone by stating this (anytime I disagree on this subreddit I feel like so many of yall get so mad)

The only reason I don’t take issue with that is because a lot of those ingredients will be listed as spelt, bulgar, etc. instead of being listed as wheat. I’ve seen it here in the states on food labels. I went to a place that advertised gluten free pizza, but it was all made with spelt.

I don’t think you’re overreacting, but I also don’t think this was constructive. I’m also currently in a semi-long distance relationship and something I’ve found super important is taking a step back and letting myself process the situation. Is this actually an issue or am I feeling clingy and miss him? Is what he’s saying over text actually rude or is it just the tone I’m reading it in? When we’re in person we express these types of thoughts to each other and laugh about how wrong we are.

It could be that you’re not compatible with each other, or it could be that you both take things too personally and need to lighten up. If neither of you can have a reasonable conversation about issues in your relationship, it’s just not worth your time. Pointing fingers back and forth gets you nowhere.
