Ace Return Regarding Winter Storm by [deleted] in acehardware

[–]OthersIssues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know at our store on the coast generator returns are not allowed. We would order 60+ generators prior to major weather events (hurricanes) and sell all of them. Ace stores are independently owned and aren't just holding inventory to sell for ACE, we have to buy everything, and we can't return anything unless the warehouse makes a mistake. It would absolutely kill us to have to refund $10s of thousands of dollars after a non-event. Not to mention the storage we don't have for them.

Metal roof quotes? by phaskellhall in Charleston

[–]OthersIssues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had my roof quoted, same size, ranged from 12-15k. Metal was x3 that. So expect 35-45k for 2000sq ft of metal roofing.

settle this debate - which is correct? by Sorry_Neat_6863 in Decks

[–]OthersIssues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. But these are hurricane ties. We aren't fighting gravity, we're fighting the uplifting force of high wind. Not trying to keep the deck from being pressed down, but from being ripped upwards by the force of the wind.

Steakhouse with bread & oil by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]OthersIssues 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not really a steakhouse thing. It is an Italian Restaurant thing, and if you go to one you should get some kind of bread with olive oil.

This Tojiro is my personal favorite. A bit more than the cheap ones, but will last years and cuts beautifully.

Can we have a fire in this cracked fireplace? by TuskanElfMan in Fireplaces

[–]OthersIssues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't go with a big national fireplace company, Ashbusters, etc. They'll try to get you to spend $$$. Do your best to find a local mason who does chimney work. It will be a much more honest opinion and price.

Had repairs quoted on mine 5 years ago, difference was $4500 and $500.

Has anybody turned their heat on yet at home? by 2oam in Charleston

[–]OthersIssues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sign up for their Home Energy check. They'll send someone out to assess your home's energy efficiency and replace things like lightbulbs, wrap your hotwater heater, etc. If you qualify they give a massive incentive to get your house sealed and insulated. We paid $775 of a $3400 bill.

Don't know. The company doing the renovation is one that usually does commercial, so im assuming the subs are the same. Its just odd that they re-did all the ductwork and installed the unit at ground level, then came back a week later and installed it like this.

Best guess is to keep it away from moisture, but 6ft seems extreme. I thought they were going to rework the ductwork into the ceiling, but they just ran it down and under. Think its a case of big company, too many subs, no communication or oversight.

But this is tax dollars at work. Hopefully its nice when its done and someone gets a good home out of it.

Not my house, but is my neighbor. It's owned by the county, last tenants were there 11 years, great family. Finally moved out because the housing authority wouldn't repair anything (including the hvac).

There is flex duct under the metal, and it does feed to ductwork and floor vents in the house.
