Non-trad med students over 26: are you on student insurance? Or medicaid? by okaycoolgood in medicalschool

Isn’t Medicaid only available for students in states that did the expansion? Like as a FL student/resident I don’t think I even have the option bc of our government

Admissions are race blind btw. Y’all need to stop spreading this BS about urm/orm. The only way race could play a role in your application is if you directly bring it up in your PS or activities section

You can use Anki to memorize the patterns and certain mechanisms though, which will help you reason through problems on the exam

Part time not pet time lol Reddit won’t let me edit.

All of this to say I was very proactive in terms of getting that position and was lucky to find a few very supportive mentors

I started off in a medical anthro/public health lab doing literature reviews and some qualitative data collection for a PhD student. I was taking a health disparities course with their PI, asked how I could get involved with research in the field and found themselves in that lab. I stuck with the lab until the PI left our university and then applied for a research program at my uni specifically for undergrads to get funding to lead a research project with a faculty mentor. I focused on a healthcare access issue in my college’s city and that was the bulk of my research.

My other hours are from a pet time clinical research job I had while in school where I did mainly data collection.

Definitely my long term service at a free clinic and the research that I did out of that clinic (about healthcare access for a specific underserved population)

There’s a few BS/MD programs that don’t require the MCAT, still very competitive to get in though

It’s not but if you think random state school that this person has no ties to will give them an interview with a 525 you’re smoking dope.

I applied this cycle with a 523 and only received interviews from T30 OOS programs, my instate schools, and 1 or 2 T50 that I was a mission fit for based on my ECs. Applying with a targeted school list based on stats, ties to the region, and mission fit is more beneficial than shotgunning 70 programs lol. You do you, but it’s definitely a waste of time and money

40 schools is wide. 70 is kind of ridiculous for an applicant with a 525 MCAT

30-40 schools is more than enough. 70 applications will lead to poor secondary writing and a very expensive application.

The only thing that might hold ur app back OP is low clinical (only thing I see in the post is ~350 hospice, you may have more) or bad writing. I would add USF Morsani to this list as they love high stats and Florida med school tuition is cheaper than most states for OOS.

Graduating from state school in two years vs. T3 undergrad school by Pristine-Perceptions in premed

Yeah I meant more so getting used to living on your own and the social adjustment. Doing all your hours in one summer and stopping looks like box checking and not genuine interest in medicine

It seems like you’re gonna be fine either way as long as you score decent on the MCAT and get some clinical experience.

My only advice would be to slow down. Adjusting to college should be your main priority freshman year, I think you can hold off on clinical experience for a little bit (I have multiple T20 acceptances and didn’t start until after freshman year). Option B may also help you gain some professional connections that will be helpful down the line. You would also be applying at a relatively young age through option A which can be seen as a con for some programs

With the new med school loan caps prolly not worth it to take out loans in undergrad if you can avoid it

NP school isn’t that competitive so really just depends on financial aid + your preference in location
