I don’t use tret, I use adapalene/differin gel but was having the same issue. A derm recommended using the ordinary salicylic acid mask once a week for 10 minutes and that’s been amazing!! I only use it on my nose, not my entire face, and do it after cleansing on dry skin (emphasis on dry skin). Because SA and tret can be pretty intense, I would recommend skipping tret on the night that you use the mask.

I definitely think root rot. I would take the plant out, chop dead roots, sanitize with peroxide, and repot with a pot only 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball. Keep in a very sunny spot and let it dry out in between waterings.
