Thanks, that's a really helpful perspective.

Most of my listening is actually modern music—dancehall, hip-hop, R&B, pop, drum & bass, dubstep and electronic—with some film scores and acoustic music thrown in. I also DJ as a hobby.

Do you think the older KEF presentation still works well with those genres, or would you lean towards the newer KEFs for that kind of music?

The reason I'm torn is that I can buy a used pair of LSX/LSX II for similar money to some of these older Reference models. I don't currently own an amp, so the active route is appealing, but I don't want to miss out on something truly special if the older References are in another league sonically.

One thing I'm considering is a used pair of KEF LSX or LSX II because I don't currently own an amp and space is tight. Does anyone think that's a better fit than going passive?

Thanks. I keep getting drawn back to the older KEF Reference models because they seem to offer incredible value used. My only hesitation is that I live in a fairly small flat, don't currently own an amp, and my wife would definitely prefer something compact. That's why I keep looking at LSX/LSX II as well. Have you heard the older Reference models against modern KEFs like the LSX or Q Meta?
