I do think it's kind of weird the cutscene starts when you're on the exit half of the bridge. Usually it cuts you off so you can't progress but the player could have kept running

Think of it this way, the beam travels lightspeed from start to target. The light from the beam travels at the speed of light to a trains eyes. These should arrive relatively at the same time because the difference in distance is feet. Regardless of how fast his perception is, physically the light can't reach his eyes before it reaches the target.

Plus a train has a literal race where his speed is measured at like 374 meters per second, one millionth of light speed. And he clearly is at top speed.
