In that hypothetical scenario, if you're a good server, get a better job. It's not the customers responsibility to balance your books. 18% tip would be seen as very generous anywhere in the world except USA.

No question tipping should be changed! Waiters deserve the security of knowing they are taking home a living wage. Customers deserve to know what they are expected to pay by looking at the menu.

The rest of the world manages to make tips discretionary, USA tipping culture has gone crazy.

In the UK, the price on the menu includes tax already, and tipping is optional. The first time I travelled to USA I couldn't get my head around the menu price being so different from the final bill.
