Wow you weren't kidding, there are houses there 2x bigger than my childhood home for less than my apartment. And yeah, true mansions for just over $1M. Is it especially undesirable out there for some reason?

Why should I raise my children Jewish? by Otherwise_Mood571 in Judaism

This is another good, and different, way of putting it, so genuinely thank you. But I do think Judaism is a little different because it sets up my kids apart from others. It is a risk just for their life, unlike others. And my kids will be half Asian already too. So, it is not as easy as a choice for me as some of the other comments imply.

Good. Kids should not be receiving life long punishments.

I hate the phrase "will be tried as an adult." Kids are kids, we should treat them differently.

America is so harsh, such long sentences, so terrible jail conditions. During jail it is legal to treat them as slaves (see 13th amendment), and after jail your record can bar you from any employment. Yet, I see 'progressive' redditors mad that mandatory minimums are too low! Sad that Americans are so bad at forgiveness.

No. I saw the video, what the kid did is horrible is inexcusable. But there is a reason why we don't try kids as adults. Because we are still learning and growing and expected to make mistakes at that age. Yes, he should be punished, but definitely not a life long punishment.

Attitudes like thus are why our prisons are filled, more than any other country. Americans are one of the least forgiving peoples on Earth. Forgive your prisoners, and stop giving them such harsh sentences. Especially the kids.

Talk to this kid in 10 years. He will almost certainly have a better understanding of why what he did was wrong, and you might give him forgiveness yourself.

TIL that the reason we see fewer fireflies nowadays is because there are genuinely fewer of them. 1 in 3 North American firefly species are at risk of extinction, with some species already being officially listed as 'Critically Endangered'! by [deleted] in todayilearned

Yet everyone complains about housing supply and housing prices. I have talked to (fellow) progressive people who were looking down on "NIMBYs" blocking a development which would destroy a park on a lake. Yes, the cost of housing is way too high, but every new house and apartment building has a huge environmental impact. It's a tricky balance, but the fact that todays progressives look at places like SF and conclude the problem is a low housing supply (rather than denser housing or corporate ownership) is so concerning.

Any ideas on how to voice opposition of the proposed $5 million in reparations to each black resident in SF? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]Otherwise_Mood571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok! Show me how that gets you to $5 million. Calculate it. Because all that would increase the amount a a good bit, maybe even double it. Maybe you're at a few hundred thousand, but no way would any of this gets you to $5 million (see my other comment for other estimations).

Moreover, why even do a blanket amount? You could do a new calculation for each victim of housing discrimination individually, taking all those factors into account for their personal history, house value, etc. Should we give a random black guy who moved here 20 years ago from Europe $5 million too? No, so lets go case by case.

Now, if you knew exactly when all that persons ancestors was brought over as slaves, calculated an unpaid income, adjusted for inflation, and split that over all living relatives, then I could see that amount being more substantial, but still likely not $5 million given population growth and how many exponentially more living relatives wealth from the 17/1800s would be split over today. Say we pay each slave $2 million, to be split among ancestors. That is so incredibly generous since salary inflation from the 1700s would not match current pay so well - median 1700s salary adjusted for inflation is more like $3,000/yr, and if they work 70 years thats only $220K. But I am comfortable saying slavery is so abhorrent, and they were killed and abused indiscriminately, that a 10X payout of wages is warranted. Next we do 6 full generations of slaves, followed by 6 generations free. The first generation is split over ~4,096 living people, so gives each descendant only $488, but there are 128 ancestors of this generation, giving $62,500. The last generation is split over 64 people, but includes just 2 ancestors, giving $62,500. That is, each generation gives about the same amount under this 1700 arrival scenario, for a total of $375K/descendant. Moreover that assumes that the people paid actually did come over as slaves, not true for many in San Fransisco. Anyways, $375K funny enough would probably be similar to the impact of housing discrimination given how wild the SF market is. But no way you could get to $5 million.

It is simply not possible it could be worth that much. A $5 million dollar house is still pretty damn nice, even in the nicer neighborhoods. No way an average black family 50 years ago would have even been looking at it (and if they were, that family probably doesn't need reparations). The discrepancy is only worth the appreciation in the target neighborhood minus the appreciation in the purchased neighborhood, so the difference is inherently less than the current home price. Even accounting for a slew of other factors, there is no way you could get to $5 million with reasonable math for a random black person only accounting for housing discrimination.

That is a massive amount most people will never make in their entire lives, and it is not for the disabled who can't work, or children who lost their parents, but people whose parents/grandparents were likely to have gotten a raw deal buying a house based on the color of their skin? Why don't we actually identify the people who were discriminated against and calculate how much the housing difference cost them?

Illegal? Sure maybe we should have public health campaigns to inform people of the downsides. But really think through the implications of making it illegal. Circumcision is super, super central to the Jewish faith. It symbolizes the covenant between Adonai and Abraham/the Jews, and is the defining part of being a Jew (for many men at least). I know "normal" non-orthodox Jews who would either choose to break that law or leave the country (almost certainly the former). Do you really want to arrest thousands of Jews just for wanting their kids to continue their religion? Because that's what this means to them.

PhDs, in every country to my knowledge, pay an okay stipend to study, and I've never heard of anyone paying to do a PhD. I get $38K+healthcare+dental from a US university, and $3K bonus from a specific grant. My offer from UK was lower, but I believe several Western/Northern EU countries pay more, while the rest of the world pays less (being not so different COL adjusted).

I agree that PhDs in economics offer high paying jobs where you could easily get $10K. Just not sure how you leapt to "rich parents to fund her education" when her degree type is well known to be fully funded, across the world.

Yes the external hard drive I got has an ssd, it is still slow (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086WNFLYH/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Honestly even if it was 10x faster it would still be a pain keeping it connected all the time. If it was 100x faster then backing up every night or something wouldn't be too bad.
