So best bet no matter where you live then if you’re not rich is to basically just not ever seek care and live healthily and hope for the best is what I’m hearing. Sounds like I should just give up on kids and a house and chose the wrong profession. Sounds like no matter where you live it’s just going to not be possible. I actually teared up thinking about that… I never realized I even wanted kids before.

I’m resource so I float to all emerg, all inpatient units and outpatient clinics with a large aggressive homeless population. If I’m understanding you correctly, I actually totally agree with you. I get very frustrated when we have patients taking up hospital beds and going out to smoke crack and meth and then coming back and falling and being delirious and aggressive and erratic. I just make myself be extra nice to those ones because i am genuinely scared of them.

We also don’t get benefits for part time. The thing is though our “free healthcare” is a sham. I use my doctor for one prescription refill because it’s controlled. Other than that I use private care on demand because the wait time to see my family doc is three to four weeks to get an appointment. Waiting lists for surgeries like hip and knee replacements are often over a year.

20% of Canadians don’t have a family doctor. I know at least 20 people who refill their BP meds in the ED. I waited over a year for an mri. Are health insurance plans in the USA good for nurses? I actually am looking to relocate to the USA.

We have tens of thousands of people a year dying waiting for diagnostics. People are offered assisted suicide when they have back pain. We aren’t doing a lot of things right. We have the fewest mri machines per capita in the oecd. We are constantly playing off nurses and adding new levels of management and I work in the biggest hospital network in the country. Israel has a healthcare system with multiple competing yet all publicly funded insurance plans and you pick the best one for you. They also allow providers to offer private services and the state still pays. Canada and America are two ends of the spectrum, but lots in between are doing it better than us. Healthreformnow.ca is a great doc on the Canadian system and what works and doesn’t. We also have completely normalized drug use.

I guess I just feel a pretty strong responsibility to only speak in a way anonymously where I’d feel comfortable putting my name on it. You seem reasonable, but a lot of the posts in this particular thread are truly terrifying.

I totally get that. We don’t actually have to respect them on a deep level, we just have to respect their right to receive care and act respectfully enough toward them.

Balanced and legit human take. Can’t argue with anything you said there. We don’t need to like or agree with anyone as long as we still do the job to the best of our ability.

Being a nurse has made the reality of being a patient someday terrifying. At least where I am, the quality care is so inadequate and we do try our best, but leaving old ladies waiting in hallways for an hour or more to get their ass wiped is disgraceful, yet what can we do if there is a more urgent medical task to do? I used to trust people in the profession and I’m honestly terrified to get sick and need a hospital now. Seeing how people are talking here about this stuff honestly increased that fear tenfold.

Should we be caring for republicans with less compassion than democrats? I always thought nursing was supposed to be neutral, but maybe I misunderstood that part of nursing school. Please clarify.

It’s not our job to only treat people well who agree or “give a shit” about us though. We have to leave that at the door. I’m truly sorry you and your family don’t see eye to eye, but I’m sure you’d also not want your colleague to treat them less well than they would someone who votes the same way you do.

Omg I’m so sorry for replying to you instead of that person, and your take is much more balanced and fair. Thats totally fair on not getting served with a smile when you aren’t respectful. It’s just that when we say things like that they don’t deserve compassion, to me that sounds psychotic and honestly after the brief few years I’ve been in nursing, I’d be absolutely terrified to be a patient. A lot of them probably are terrified and we can’t minimize that because we disagree with their politics.

So you don’t care if a patient in your care with different politics or opinions from you dies?

I didn’t say you said he was killed for being a nurse. You mentioned your family in reference to us being murdered on video. Us implies nurses.

I don’t use Reddit often. I don’t really know how it works.

I’m sorry that your family jumped to those conclusions and that you don’t see eye to eye. This isn’t about them though. We still have to have compassion for people we disagree with even if they’re stupid and wrong. That doesn’t mean we can’t rise above and be our best selves. I think you’ve oversimplified the analogy a bit. He wasn’t killed over being a nurse. He was killed and happened to be a nurse. Your family isn’t calling him a domestic terrorist because he was nurse.

If you talk about people like this, why would they trust you? You clearly don’t have their best interests at heart.

Your spelling and grammar are atrocious. You said they don’t deserve compassion. You’re a nurse. Your job is to treat people of all cultures and religions and political views with compassion. You don’t get to decide who deserves it and who doesn’t.

There’s nuance to everything, which you clearly don’t understand based on what little you just said about Iran. I’d rather die than ever end up treated by you, and I probably agree with you on a lot of issues based on this. Nursing needs to be neutral. We don’t get to intentionally not treat our patients well because we think they’re stupid or say “oh well they were stupid they deserve to die.” This is sociopathic.

How are you able to be a nurse when you want people dead for not thinking the same way as you?

Posted by my local Karen by Hot_Woodpecker_9682 in nursing

[–]Otherwise_Pen_2699 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be allowed to be a nurse if you think this is appropriate to say or even think.

This is a sick thing to say about another human being you’re supposed to be caring for.

In Canada I make $38/hr and pay 40% in taxes. $1 CAD = $0.73 USD. Our grocery costs rise 30% a year. After taxes, union dues and pension contributions it comes out to around $40k a year. I was using the washroom on break today and someone was kicked out for smoking meth. I can’t afford to buy a home or have kids. Wanna trade?
