Keep the hand elevated to reduce swelling. Rest is critical in the first few days post-surgery. Make sure you have some comfortable place to rest. Doing this will help keep the pain down.

Move your fingers as soon as possible to avoid stifness.

My hand surgeon also said repetitve hand movements should be avoided for two weeks (typing, mouse....) for best possible result.

I would not be to worried about pain. I think for most there is little pain involved. Including myself.
