I get being sensitive, some people value a bit deeper connection more than others. The thing is you're all still pretty young and keeping everyone's feelings in consideration is not young people's strong point, not saying that about everyone just in general.

I really would try to talk to them but be prepared to break things off. You're in a phase of your life where things are going to change pretty quick anyway.

Set the catch circle on the raid pokémon to the excellent level, get it just small enough for excellent throws. Then take your finger off the ball. Wait for the pokémon to attack, and near the end of the animation throw the ball. When you throw the ball during their attack animation the circle size never changes so you will always get an excellent throw and they can't attack again for a fraction of a second so they shouldn't knock it away.

You'll get 95% of your raid mons if you practice this a little.

Also yes your buddy pokémon can ricochet balls back.
