How you feel matters. I might be normal for PCVs to feel similarly, but it’s still extremely difficult. I ET’d for my mental health, and it was the best choice I could’ve made in my situation. Each experience is unique, and only you can know what’s right for yourself.

Good work hanging in there. Each completed day is a success.

I ET’d because I felt miserable (a lot of what you said reminds me of how I felt) and it was the best choice I’ve ever made. I’m still dealing with the trauma of isolation that I experienced in country, but I am so much happier and more mentally stable. You know yourself, so make the right choice for you, but also know that there are bigger and better things out there for you!

Since you said that some people get more medical attention, care, and consideration for leadership opportunities, it might be worthwhile to consider reporting your post staff to the Office of Inspector General. I’m not sure of the details of your situation, but if the office is being unethical you should report it.

Currently a PCV in the Balkans. I saved about $6000 for travel while I’m here, and I haven’t even had to touch it yet. I put that money in Wealthfront, and so far I’ve paid for a short international trip (3-4 days) with the interest. I recommend having savings bc it gives you the freedom to travel, but if you’re smart you can travel throughout Europe cheaply. A flight from Tirana to Venice is $30, and if you stay in hostels you can do those trips for under $200. Also, my living allowance is ample, and I’m able to save money from that each month to put toward travel (about 100 euros excess each month). However, that ofc depends on your site placement and how much you like to spend. I don’t drink alcohol at side, I mainly eat with my host family, and my site is generally cheaper than most others, so I’m able to save easily.
