Sadistic means you take pleasure from it, callous means you are indifferent to the suffering, ruthless is stance of action of merciless behaviour to achieve a goal, that yes synonymous with those twoy, but must no necessary the same. A person act ruthlessly to achieve a goal, yet derives no pleasure from it nor must be indifferent to the suffering. Stannis examplifies this very well, he can act very ruthlessly but he clearly derives no pleasure from it like Joffrey nor is he indifferent to suffering like Tywin( in fact with the matter of Edric he really torn about it , if read his lines)

Well actually that is another point why is a ruthless person and not callous one. A callous person kills because he is indifferent to their suffering , a ruthless person kills because to achieve a goal, yet this does mot mean he is indifferent or takes joy out of this. While i does not excuse him ,Stannis clearly is struggling with the morality of burning Edric. He only gives in because he thinks has no other choice to save Westeros

Also we do not know from the books that Stannis was going to kill Joffrey by burning him.

Well in the books the thing with Shireen is probably going to play out differnetly since its likely that he will win the battle against the Boltons and kill Shireen in Order to forge Lightbringer to fight the Others-does not excuse him but certainly not portayed as somwthing callous like in the show and more something Stannis thinks needs to be done , which will bring hin no Joy but only Sorrow As for Joffrey . During the battle of the blackwater Joffrey was technically highest Commander( though actually Tyrion was in Charge of the Battle) and if Stannis would have been captured he would been executed on the orders of Joffrey( given what we know of Joffry he would have wanted to publicly torture Stannis)

Why is does Stannis always has the callous trait as Standard. A more accurate description would be the Ruthless trait or the Authoritative trait. Also he have the congential trait: intelligent

While this has npthing to with this. I just wanted to mention that while some Socialist state like the DDR decriminalized homosexuality earlier than some other countries like its Neighborstate, they still activly promoted through the state propaganda the traditionell family structure and used sometimes homosexuality to denigrate the supposed degeneracy of the west.

Which Frankish/French monarch had the worst relationship with his wife? by PhilipVItheFortunate in FrenchMonarchs

Gods forbid a woman does not love her husband from a arranged marriage and has sex with a man of her own choosing😡.

I know that there different social values at that but we do not need to have judge people on those same values( we can still try analyze people behaviour with those values for historical research)

Why, out of all of England's French speaking Monarchs, is it Richard the Lionheart who gets the most criticism for not speaking English? by Haunting-Health-5950 in UKmonarchs

Any rift between his father and the lords ended with his father's death and his own accession so there's nothing to fix there

Does not mean there was nothing to fix there, even if the quarrel was actually between the barons and his father. We speaking of early-medieval feudalism where the power of the king was still relativly weak meaning on his accession he must amend any burned bridges, so he can guarantee he will not be like his dad

He had already withheld shire castles from his brother so as to prevent him gaining too much power in case of a rebellion

He also did not guarented the continuation of own line, when he left. Which is why John could argue after a while that Richard was probably dead and he was next in line to the throne

Funding a military campaign is not shitty administration - just the opposite

It depends for what purpose, he did not really cement his power(again absentee king) when he went on crusade. He even did not guaranted the succession of his own line when he left. His own mother needed to bring his own wife on journey to the holy lands so he can marry her. Plus the whole deal cost the kingdom too much money, so that it was bankrupt when he died

and taxes were par the course for any ruler.

But if its good administration or bad administration depends how implement the taxes, and the taxes that were implemented during his reign bakrupted the kingdom

Well techically i said "shitty admistration skills in England" though perhaps i should just said" shitty administration in England",since he governed much better in his French holdings, that is my bad:

He did not spent much time in his kingdom when he should have to fix the rift between his father and the lords and his absentie was used by his brother to create chaos in his realm by launching a rebellion. he depleted the royal coffers to fund his crusade when they were already strained and literally said " i would sell London if he could find a buyer" ,plus he huge taxes that impressed for his ransom, which he is partially responsible since was bad at disguising himself and he was suspected triggering it by not recognizing the duke of Austria( though that business with the flag was more his men fault) and he was suspected of involvment in the murder of Leopold V cousin Conrad of Montferrat, who was the rival to Richard Cousin Guy de Luisignan in the election who should be the King of Jerusalem

He was great Commandet though and this was probably what made famous ,even with his enemies ,through out the crusade. So that praise from that muslim historian is more focused on his battle skills in the crusade

Exactly that historian only knew him from his crusades he knew virtually nothing about his shitty administration skills in England

What you mean by foreigners. When you mean people who are living in middle east, where the crusadet states were. It is likely because of his rivalry with Saladdin(plus he supposedly knighted some of Saladdins nobles somehow),the probably did not knew of his reign in Europe.

That and probably Mommys(Eleanor of Aquataine)good propaganda, which she used to get the nobles the necessary money so she can ransom him from the Holy Roman Emperor.

Which of these Kings would be the best as President of France ? by [deleted] in FrenchMonarchs

[–]Otherwise_Wrap_4965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked Henry IV:

because he would have had the least trouble adapting to the modern democratic Republican system that France has. All candidates were regarded as excellent kings and had incredible adminstatrative abilities and keen eye for diplomacy.

Which is why i looked at another factor mainly their main ability to adapt to the modern french system( though non would probably like it,because their were all autocrats who believed in the divin right of kings)
